Italian media: Suspect in Berlin truck attack shot dead in Milan

MILAN (AP) — A man killed in a shootout with police in Milan early Friday is the main suspect in the truck attack on a Berlin Christmas market that killed 12 people, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

何度もブログで取り上げられていたので復習になりますが、“plowed into”を取り上げます。plowの語源を調べてみると古期英語で ploh 「耕地」というところから由来してきており、イギリスではploughと綴ることがわかりました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(車などが)ぶち当たる，突っ込む」とありました。LDOCEを見てみると“to crash into something or someone, especially while driving, because you are unable to stop quickly enough”と定義されており、特に制御不能なときというような意味が含まれていますが、今回は計画的に突っ込んで実行されたもので、制御不能ではないと思いました。
派生した意味で、英辞郎on the WEBによると「仕事などに張り切って取り掛かる」という意味もあるようです。
以前取り上げられていたブログをみても今年7月に起きた、フランスでの大型トラックが暴走して、多くの人が亡くなった際にも同じ“plow into”が使われていることがわかります。(lua)
