plow ahead 復習

　和歌山と大阪を結ぶ高速バスが渋滞を迂回しようとしたところ、道を間違え、狭い山道で立ち往生していたことがわかりました。

Dozens of terrified passengers riding on an expressway bus were stuck for about an hour on a sheer cliff after a West JR Bus Co. driver took a wrong turn on the evening of Aug. 26.

The driver continued to plow ahead on a narrow mountain path while scraping the guardrail and damaging the bus.

A company official told The Asahi Shimbun on Aug. 28 that none of the 38 passengers were injured.

　plow ahead /plάʊ/ を取り上げます。文脈から、狭い道をどんどん進んでいく様子を表していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（物事を）押し進める（with）」という意味が見つかりました。名詞のplowは耕作用のすきを表しますが、動詞としては「1耕す　2骨を折って進む、かき分けて進む」という意味を持ちます。

　Merriam-Websterには “to continue to do something without being stopped by problems or opposition” と定義されています。問題や反対があっても押し切る様子を表すようです。

　乗客にけがはなく、バス会社が手配したタクシーに乗り換え、自宅まで帰るなどしたとのことです。以前ブログにはplow intoという表現が取り上げられていました。（aqua）
