横浜アリーナで行われた「2016 Jリーグアウォーズ」で、川崎フロンターレのMF中村憲剛が初の最優秀選手賞(MVP)に輝いたそうです。

Frontale’s Nakamura named J.League MVP

YOKOHAMA — After helping Kawasaki Frontale come within a few kicks of a first-ever J.League championship, veteran midfielder Kengo Nakamura was honored as the league’s most valuable player for the first time in his storied career.

Nakamura, who was also selected for the Best XI team for the sixth time after leading Frontale to third place in the overall season standings, was announced as the winner at the J.League Awards ceremony on Tuesday night in Yokohama.

At 36, Nakamura becomes the oldest MVP, eclipsing namesake Shunsuke Nakamura, who was 35 when he received the award in 2013 with Yokohama F Marinos.

“eclipsing”を取り上げます。eclipseで日食という意味があることから動詞では「食する」という意味もありますが、ここでの使い方は『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「競争相手などをしのぐ，…の顔色をなからしめる」という意味で中村俊輔選手の最年長記録を上回ったというように訳せるかと思いました。語源はギリシャ語で「姿を消す」という意味があるようです。
LDOCEでは“a situation in which someone or something loses their power or fame, because someone or something else has become more powerful or famous”とあり、今回のように記録を更新して人物を越える時などにも使うことがわかりました。(lua)
