HIROSHIMA — The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters finished off the Hiroshima Carp 10-4 on Saturday night at Mazda Stadium to wrap up the best-of-seven Japan Series in six games.
It was the club’s third Japan Series title overall and first in 10 years.
Nippon Ham’s Brandon Laird, who smacked a grand slam in the Series-clinching victory, earned the MVP honor for the Pacific League-winning Fighters.
The Carp, who won the Central League by a wide margin over the Yomiuri Giants, came up short in their effort to win the club’s first Series title in 32 years.
The Fighters broke out for six runs in the eighth inning.
Sho Nakata drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the tiebreaking run, and Laird capped the rally with his third homer of the Series to seal the victory.
“I started making moves really early, and I felt like even if we allowed a run here and there, I wanted to take things to the back end of the game with our lineup and our bullpen,” said Nippon Ham skipper Hideki Kuriyama.
Said Nakata: “I’m sure if we hadn’t scored in the eighth inning, we would have lost this game. In that inning, we showed we weren’t going to give up. I’m glad we were able to do the traditional toss of the manager — it’s a great way to close things out.”

今回取り上げる表現は、“hog heaven”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)で“hog”を引いたところ、「(肥えた食用の)豚」という意味がありました。“hog heaven”をそのまま訳すと「豚の天国」といった意味になりますが、実は“至福[絶頂・最高]の時[状態・状況]”という意味があります。Merriam-Websterでは、“a very pleasing or satisfying state or situation”と定義されていました。
