長野県野沢温泉村のスキー場で、今月12日に遭難したフィンランド人6名が救出されました。
Skiers stranded off-piste rescued
Twelve skiers who were stranded on mountains in Nagano and Fukushima prefectures have all been brought to safety.
Six of the men were visiting Nozawa Onsen ski resort in Nagano from Finland. They had ventured outside marked routes and called local police for help around 2:30 PM on Tuesday.
Police located them on a slope on the northwestern side of the resort, but could not reach them the same day due to poor visibility.
Police say they rescued the skiers by helicopter on Wednesday morning. They say none of the men were injured, but 5 of them complained of poor health and were sent to hospital.
The group did not submit the required documents to ski off-piste. The resort asks skiers to provide information in advance on plans for back-country skiing, including emergency contact addresses and safety gear.

今回取り上げるのは、“ski off-piste”という表現です。まず“piste”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“British English a snow-covered slope which has been prepared for people to ski down”と定義されていました。
このことから、この単語は「圧雪してあるゲレンデ、滑降コース」のことだと分かります。今回の記事では“ski off-piste”となっているため、「雪が固められたコースから外れて滑降する」となるでしょうか。ちなみに、日本語でも「人工的に圧雪されていない雪面」を「オフピステ」と呼ぶことがあるそうです。
また、記事にある“back-country”を「Weblio英和辞典」で確認してみると、「山奥地、町から離れた未開地」などを意味すること分かりました。そのため、「まだ人の手が加わっていない、人工的に圧雪されていない」と解釈でき、今回取り上げた“off-piste”とほとんど同じ意味を表していると考えられます。(ninetails)
