‘Blue train’ sleeper express rides off into sunset
Thousands of train buffs gathered on the platform at Tokyo’s Ueno Station to bid "sayonara" to the Hokutosei express, ending an illustrious chapter of "blue train" sleeper expresses in the postwar era.
The last remaining blue train sleeper express, bound for Sapporo, pulled out of Ueno Station at 7:03 p.m. on March 13. The train carried a capacity 221 passengers on its last regular service trip to Hokkaido.

今回取り上げるのは、”ride〔head, sail〕off into sunset”という表現です。この表現を見た時、馬などが夕日に向かって走り去っている映像を思い浮かべました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』で調べると、思い浮かべたとおりで「夕日の中に馬に乗って〔まっすぐ進んで、船に乗って〕消えていく」とありました。また、「〈映画のハッピーエンディングシーンで〉」という記述もあり、「有終の美を飾る、歴史に幕を閉じる」という意味で用いられています。(ninetails)
