『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「[…への]V字型刻み目, 切込み,」「段, 級, 程度」とありました。これは主に新聞用語として使われているそうです。LDOCEは “a level on a scale that measures something, for example quality or achievement” と定義しています。
語源を同辞書で調べると “ Probably from an otch, mistaken for a notch; from early French oche “V-shaped cut”” とあり、フランス語から派生したとありました。
記事の内容に戻りますが、今年の夏に、自身と同ゼミ生でジェンダーについての調査のためフィンランドへ行きました。現地の人々にお話聞いたり、アンケートや質問をしました。一つ思ったことは、男女格差がない国ほど性別はあまり意識しない傾向にあるということです。「女だから…」「男だから…」という考え方がないそうです。根本的な違いはここにあるのではないでしょうか。(amphibian)

まず『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「一生懸命に≪…する≫ ≪to do≫」とありました。また、英辞郎 on the WEBには「何でもする、できる［あらん］限りのことをする」とあります。記事の後半には5Gは4Gよりも使用料がかかることなどが書かれていました。最初の段落ではstand in one’s headを用い、その懸念を表しているのだと思います。
ちなみに、インターネットのCambridge Dictionaryによると、“If you can do something standing on your head, you can do it very easily”とありました。日本語で言うところの「朝飯前」もこのフレーズで表現することができるようです。(Blue Sky)

Dear Dr. Tanabe,
I arrived at Dallas, Texas yesterday. I am staying at one of the hotels located in Dallas downtown, and I am at STUMPTOWN COFEE right now. Here are some shares about the downtown.
On the way to the coffee house, I found the population of African-American people high here in Dallas. A shuttle bus driver in Dallas Fort/Worth International Airport was African American. So was the front desk staff in the hotel. Even opticians in the store along the street were black. Most of them were cheerful and liked to talk. I got held up talking with the front desk guy for an hour last night.
Speaking of English spoken in the south, Southern American English, I noticed that there are many differences from the kind of accent I have been accustomed in Lincoln. One of the differences was a phonetic difference. I cannot explain it from the professional perspectives, but in the phrase "terminal link”, for example, /k/ sound was almost all the time dropped and made me wonder what it was in the beginning.

12月1日から福井県で伝統的な漁業のたたき網漁が始まりました。

今回取り上げるのは ruckus /rˈʌkəs/ です。文脈から推測すると、「騒がしい音」と考えました。さっそく『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で調べてみると、「喧騒、口論」とありました。また、LDOCEには “especially American English informal a noisy argument or confuse situation”とあり、主にアメリカで使われるそうです。
このたたき網漁ですが、主に福井県の若狭町で行われ、地元ではたたき網漁を方言で「かち網漁」と呼ぶそうです。今では珍しくなってしまった、江戸時代から続く日本の伝統的な漁業の１つです。(KOH)

だいぶ期間が空いてしまいました。申し訳ありません。本日、最後の学期末テストが終了し、冬休みに突入しました。
テスト勉強をしている際に見つけた単語を紹介します。ginormous /dʒɑɪnˈɔɚməs/ です。単語のすぐ横にgiant + enormous という説明があったので意味はすぐに理解できましたが、目にする機会が少ない単語だと思ったので調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。

Collins Free Online Dictionary: “very large”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「｟英略式｠途方もなく巨大な（huge）」
語源はOEDによると “1940s (originally military slang): blend of GIANT and ENORMOUS“とのことです。
辞書では「途方もなく巨大な」というきれいな日本語が当てられていますが、もとがslangであり、今もinformalな単語ということであれば、「ばかでかい、どでかい」といった訳のほうが個人的には覚えやすく、使いやすいと感じました。
クリスマスが近づいてきており、キャンパスや寮にクリスマスツリーが設置され始めました。ルームメイトに聞いたところやはりカナダではhugeなイベントとのことなので、日本との違いを感じながら楽しみたいと思います。(ko-chi @ Calgary)
