今回はgrave /gréɪv/ を紹介します。まず思いつくのが「墓」という意味ですが、それではうまく解釈できません。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「＜物・事が＞重大な；ゆゆしい, 危機をはらんだ」とあり、「seriousよりも深刻な事態を暗示する」と説明されていました。LDOCEは “grave problems, situations, or worries are very great or bad” と定義しており “In everyday English, people usually use serious rather than grave, and seriously rather than gravely” ともあります。

　今回取り上げる語は、ballsy /ˈbɔːlzi/ です。文脈から「勇敢な」と推測しました。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
　まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“brave and determined” とあり、LDOCE には “brave and determined, and not afraid of other people’s disapproval” と定義されていました。
　次に語源を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY でみると、“"courageous, masculine," 1959, first attested in Norman Mailer (writing of Truman Capote); see balls + -y (2).” とあります。以前、研究室でゼミ生と ball には「勇気」という意味があることで盛り上がったのを思い出しました。

　フィギュアスケートのGPファイナルの女子フリーが行われ、ショートプログラムで1位だった紀平梨花選手が初優勝を飾りました。日本勢としては2013年の浅田真央選手以来の快挙となります。

　clean /klíːn/ を取り上げます。cleanといえば「清潔な、きれいな」といった意味をまず連想します。記事ではcleanは副詞として使われていますが、どのような意味になるのでしょうか。

　まず『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「見事に、鮮やかに、ずばりと」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“used to emphasize the fact that an action or movements is complete and thorough”と定義されています。記事においては、見事に滑ってみせたといった具合になるかと思います。使い方としては形容詞になりますが、野球などでも良い当たりのことをa clean hitなどと表現することを思い出しました。

今回取り上げるのは underemployed / ʌ́ndɚɪmplɔ́ɪd / です。文脈から「非正規雇用の」と推測しました。まず、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で調べてみると、「不完全就業の、十分な仕事がない ; 能力が発揮できる仕事についていない」とありました。また、同じ辞書で接頭語の underを調べてみると「1 (…より)下の［に］、下から」「2 下位の、従属した」「3 不十分に、(標準より)少なく」とありました。最後に、LDOCEでこの単語を調べてみると、“working in a job where you cannot use all your skills or where there is not enough work for you to do”という定義が見つかりました。

　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〔…との〕口論,激論」とありました。LDOCEでは“a short noisy argument”と定義されています。固い単語だそうです。
　LDOCEによると語源は“French Latin altercatio, from altercari to quarrel”とありました。
　「口論」と聞くとパッと思いつくのはargumentなのですが、altercationとどう違うのでしょうか。LDOCEにargumentは“a situation in which two or more people disagree, often angrily”と記載されていました。argumentは「口論」だと思っていましたが、これを見ると「議論」というニュアンスの方が強いのではないかと感じます。(rain)
