気になったのは、by halvesです。halfの意味と文脈から、「中途半端」という意味なのではないかと予想しました。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「中途半端に、生半可には」とありました。使用例として、You bought a Ferrari! Well, you never did anything by halves.「フェラーリを買ったんだってね。なるほど君は何ごとも中途半端はしたことないものね。」が示されていました。例文も記事も否定文で使われているように、通例否定文で使われる表現なんだそうです。確認のためにCollins Dictionaryも引いたところ、“without being thorough or exhaustive”と定義されていました。Collins Dictionaryにもused with a negativeと記述があったので、やはり否定文で用いられるのが通例のようです。(Blue Sky)

root out 復習
Canadian historyの授業にて用いられている教科書を読んでいる中で多く目にした語を紹介します。
root outです。最初のイメージとしては、root「根っこ」とout「外へ、外れて」を連想し、文脈上カナダにおける植民地争いについての話題であったことから、「（相手の）息の根を止める」と予測しました。以下で確認していきます。
Collins English Dictionaryでは、“If root out a person, you find them and force them from the place they are in, usually in order to punish them.” “(in British) to remove or eliminate completely.” とあります。
続いて、Vocabulary.comで同様に探ると、“destroy completely, as if down to the roots.”と定義されていました。

定期的に、Social Justice, Human Rights and the Media の授業ではPop-up discussionというものを行います。その中ではその回に割り当てられたグループが、アメリカ国内で発生した事件などを取り上げ、そこから見える「人権」は何か、またその例が作り出す矛盾は存在しているのか、などをクラス全体で討論するのですが、今回はあまりにも刺激的だったので、そのトピックに関する記事より本日は単語を取り上げます。

正直言って今回感じたこの感覚を簡潔な言葉にすることが難しいです。自分の父親が銃を突きつけられた、自分の恋人が撃たれて怪我をしたという日本での生活では絶対に考えられない経験談が耳に飛び込んできたり、この話題に関して複雑な感情がこみ上げてきて意見を話しながら泣き出してしまう学生がいたりなどと、今回は想像以上のディスカッションに身を置くことができました。その一方で個人として悔しかったことは、黒人差別、銃規制に関する知識がまだ足りなかったせいで、ただただ耳に入ってくる情報を落とし込むというだけで、意見がまとまらなかったということです。この歯がゆい感覚を次の行動につなげていこうと思います。(WREN@Nebraska)

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(動植物が)野生の、(人の手を離れて)(ペット・家畜が)野生に戻った、(人が)野蛮な」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “feral animals used to live with humans but have become wild” “feral children or young people behave badly in public and commit crimes, because they are not controlled by anyone and have no respect for authority” と定義されています。Oxford English DictionariesをみるとEarly 17th century: from Latin fera ‘wild animal’ (from ferus ‘wild’) + -al.と、語の由来がありました。
