"Welcome to the club"を取り上げます。『goo辞書』によると、"Join the club"と同じ意味であることが分かり、「お仲間ですね」とありました。同じ状況になった時に用いるようで、良いこと、悪いことの両方に使うことができます。例として、"I lost fifty dollars at the races." "Join the club, I lost sixty dollars."とありました。"club"には、「クラブ、同好会」という意味があり，この直訳からもその意味は推測できます。（Starlight)

古代エジプト時代につくられたツタンカーメンの墓の壁の裏側に隠し部屋が存在することを示す調査結果が出たことが明らかになりました。ツタンカーメンの義母でエジプト三大美女とも言われるネフェルティティ王妃が埋葬されている墓の可能性があるようです。

LUXOR, EGYPT – Chances are high that the tomb of ancient Egypt’s boy-king Tutankhamun has passages to a hidden chamber, which may be the lost last resting place of Queen Nefertiti, experts said on Saturday.
“There is, in fact, an empty space behind the wall based on radar, which is very accurate — there is no doubt,” Japanese radar specialist Hirokatsu Watanabe said, his hand hovering over a fuzzy blue radar scan he said indicated the presence of a false wall. The size of the cavity is not known.
There is huge international interest in Nefertiti, who died in the 14th century B.C. and is thought to be Tutankhamun’s stepmother. Confirmation of her final resting place would be the most remarkable Egyptian archaeological find this century.
New evidence from the radar imaging taken so far is to be sent to a team in Japan for analysis. The results are expected to be announced in a month.
“We said earlier there was a 60 percent chance there is something behind the walls. But now, after the initial reading of the scans, we are saying now it’s 90 percent likely there is something behind the walls,” Egyptian Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty told a news conference.
He said he expects to reach the other side of the tomb’s wall within three months.
Discovery of Nefertiti, whose chiseled cheek bones and regal beauty were immortalized in a 3,300-year old bust now in a Berlin museum, would shed fresh light on what remains a mysterious period of Egyptian history.
It could also be a boon for Egypt’s ailing tourism industry, which is a vital source of foreign currency but has suffered nearly endless setbacks since the uprising that toppled autocratic President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

今回取り上げる表現は “boon”です。G4では「〔…に対する〕恩恵、利益」とあり、LDOCEでは “something that is very useful and makes your life a lot easier or better”と定義づけられていました。この “boon”は古ノルド語の “bon（請願、祈願）”が語源です。
一方で『ジーニアス英和大辞典（大修館書店）』では別の “boon”を見つけることができます。こちらの意味は「愉快な、親切な」、「親切な、優しい」であり、 ラテン語の“bonus（良い）”から来ています。なお、「賞与、ボーナス、特典」を意味する “bonus”と同じ語源です。（Inaho）

Gamba Osaka striker Patric said he was racially abused on Twitter following their 3-1 extra time win over Urawa Red Diamonds in the J-League semi-final playoff on Saturday.
The Brazilian, who joined Gamba last year having first played in Japan for Kawasaki Frontale in 2013, scored the third goal at the Reds' Saitama Stadium to send the holders through to the two legged final against Sanfrecce Hiroshima this week.
The 28-year-old said he was shocked by the abuse.

今回取り上げるのは、“two legged”という表現です。“leg”と聞くと、「（人や動物、または椅子などの）脚、脚上のもの」を連想することが多いです。しかし、今回のこの表現をLDOCEで調べてみると、“British English one of the series of games in a football competition played between two teams”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「（旅行・競技・活動などの）ステージ、1区切り、行程」といった意味が載っていました。また調べていると、この“two legs”は「本拠地と敵地で行われる2試合」のことを指しており、今回はそれが形容詞的な役割をしていると分かりました。(ninetails)

ご無沙汰をしております。本務の方が加速度的に忙しくなり，英語学習もおざなりになってきていました。すみません。本日はお詫びの印にひとつ。
Made in ~という表現はおなじみのものですが，次の写真にあるMade by Swedenはいかがでしょうか。
趣味で講読している Car Graphic １１月号に掲載されたVolvoの広告です。かつては生産地を表したmade in~という表現ですが，もはや「生産国＝生産地」という図式は成り立ちにくくなっています。あのVolvoとて例外ではありません。かつ同社の場合，その本体はFordから2010年には中国の浙江吉利控股集団に買収され，もはや「北欧のクルマ」とは単純には呼べないのが実情です（日本割当分はSwedenの工場から運ばれてきているようですが...）。いずれにしてもここのbyからは，たとえその身はアジアの大国に売られようとも「Norse魂」はここにありというあの会社の「矜持」のようなものを感じます。（静岡市立 Koyamamoto）

本日は、あまり知られていない植物についての記事を扱います。この植物の繊維は、工学、建築、製紙、プラスティック製造など様々な分野に活用でき、経済的効果が高いそうです。

本日は"nondescript"を拾いたいと思います。『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』によりますと、「《通例名詞の前で》特徴のない、ありきたりの; 魅力のない、得体の知れない」とありました。ODには"Lacking distinctive or interesting features or characteristics"とあります。語源を調べてみると、ラテン語から、否定を表す"non-"に"described, engraved"を表す"descript"から成っているとあります。(Online Etymology Dictionary) 。17世紀後半には"not previously described or identified scientifically"との意味で用いられていました。(OD) これを踏まえると、日本語の4つの語義が共通点を持ってまとまるような気がしました。以下、例文になります。

first penguin考
めちゃんこ忙しくてブログをまっとうに管理するヒマもない位なのですが，これだけはどうしても。以下，粗い書き方になります（推敲なし！），お許しを。
好評の朝の連続ドラマ「あさが来た」ですが，先週土曜日の回で，五代才助（友厚）が"The first penguin#という表現をヒロイン・あさに難局に立ち向かう姿勢を教示するときに出てきたのがこの表現。これはすでにわがブログでもUmeちゃんがふれていますが（そのときにはコメントはしませんでした），米国人でもあまり知らない表現だではないでしょうか。ネットで出てくるのはUmeちゃんが紹介したカーネギーメロン大学の故Randy Pausch教授の退官記念講演（2007年9月）にまつわる記事で，教授が世界に知らしめたのではないでしょうか（といって断言はできません。誰かOEDやそのほかを当たってくだされ）。明治の最初に五代がそんな表現を知っていたのか疑問に思いました。原作にもあるのでしょうか。
ドラマそのものが史実から遊離した「つくりもの」（フィクション）なので，これ位にしておきますが，ただし五代の英語発音だけは確実におかしいと言えます。史実をモディファイしているとはいえ，誤ったnotionが広まるだけは，日本英語教育史を研究している者としてはどうも寝覚めが悪いのです。
五代は長崎海軍伝習所でオランダ語に触れ，その後，英国留学をしていたとしても明治の初頭にあれほどの米国発音をしていた日本人がいると一般の人が思ってしまうのはどうも気に障ります。
ちなみにディーン藤岡さんの英語発音はその/r/音が特徴的なように英国帰りのものとはとても思えず，米国の西海岸あたりで暮していたと思われるアクセントです。プロデューサーの判断で，藤岡さんの直感にまかせているのでしょう。
なにせ，明治５年に「薩摩辞書」（これもドラマに登場！でも装丁がおかしかった！）が出されて，はじめて「正音」のなんたるかについて，「暗闇であかりを見つけた」と，当時を物語る専門書には書かれており，あの万次郎ですら，かなりの母語干渉（L1 interference）があったことがその著作から窺えるほどです。
ということでドラマはドラマとして楽しめば良いことですが，どうも気になった次第です。（UG）
Be the First Penguin
The idea of the “first penguin” comes from the late Randy Pausch’s book The Last Lecture. Paush, a former professor at Carnegie Mellon, describes how he developed a “First Penguin Award” to reward students who took great risks in pursuing their goals, even though they met with failure. The title of the award comes from the notion that when penguins are about to jump into water that might contain predators, well, somebody’s got to be the first to jump. The First Penguin award is, in essence, a celebration of risk taking.

What is the origin of the word 'penguin'?
The origin of penguin is still debated. The name originally applied to the great auk (now extinct) of the seas around Newfoundland in Canada, and may have come from the Welsh pen gwyn, meaning 'white head' (or a similar phrase in the Breton or Cornish languages). In the logbook of the Golden Hind, which sailed around the world in 1577–80, there is a reference to a 'foule, which the Welsh men name Pengwin' that was seen in the Magellan Straight at the tip of South America. The sailors on the expedition may have mistaken penguins for great auks, or simply applied a term they knew to an unfamiliar bird: the great auk resembled a penguin in that it was a large flightless bird with black and white plumage that was adapted to life in freezing waters.

haggle 復習
COP21がフランス・パリで開催されております。気候変動対策のため包括的な合意事項を結ぶことが目的です。全195ヶ国が参加し，2周間以内に協定を結ぶこととなっております。協議では，先進国と後進国では利害の隔たりが大きく，議論が難航することが予想されます。
記事の中で気になった単語は"haggle"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「値切る，《…のことで》言い合う，《人と》やり合う, かけ合う」などという意味がありました。ODには"Dispute or bargain persistently, especially over the cost of something"と定義されております。（Ume）
COP21: Poor countries fear being 'left behind' in rush for deal
While the arrival of the leaders will give a significant boost to the conference, the practical difficulties of securing a deal have not gone away.
At present the negotiating text runs to more than 50 dense pages, filled with brackets, indicating disagreement.
The hope is that, by the end of this week, a new draft agreement will be ready for environment ministers to haggle over during the second half of the conference.
Among those attending the talks is the broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough. He said he was not confident that the Paris talks would produce a deal to tackle the "hideous problem" of climate change.
"We know the consequences of rise of temperature, what it will do for the oceans, for example," he told the BBC.
persona non grata
一昨日のJapan Newsより、"persona non grata"と大きく記載がありました。もうご存知の人も多いのではないかと思いますが、日本では「杉原千畝 スギハラチウネ」というタイトルで12月5日に映画が公開されます。私は恥ずかしながら、この映画が公開されるということで、名前を知ったのですが、調べていると1937年に反革命的なロシア人との交流を理由にソ連から"persona non grata"とされ、リトアニアに赴任された方だということを知りました。
この"persona non grata"は外交用語の一つで、『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』にも記載されており、「(受け入れ国・政府にとって)好ましくない外交官」「好ましくない人物」とありました。
さらに調べていくと、外交団員の一員となるには外交官になる必要があり、外交官になるには派遣国に認められると同様に、接受国にも認めてもらわねばならないそうです。そして接受国から受け入れを認められた場合は(フランス語で)agrémentとされるのですが、逆に拒否されることもあり、それが"persona non grata"であるということがわかりました。
リトアニアではすでに公開され、スタンディングオーベーションを受けたということで、私も観に行きたいと思いました。(lua)
