今回拾い上げる表現は、“at center stage”です。まず、意味を考えていきます。そのままとらえていくと、「ステージの真ん中」になります。このような意味はありますが、これでは、文脈に合いません。では、どのような意味になるか。文脈から推測すると、「話題の焦点や中心」になるかなと考えました。確認のため『Merriam-Webster』を見ると、“a main or very important position”と記載されていました。「重要な位置」になるとわかりました。つまり、ここでは、シリア難民受け入れの安全性は、大統領選の重要な位置づけをしているというニュアンスがあると思います。パリで起こったテロの影響力が伺えます。(Nao)

内閣府が16日に発表した2015年7月〜9月期の国内総生産は年率換算で0.8％減少し、2期連続のマイナス成長であることが分かりました。
Japan's economy falls back into recession again
Japan's economy has fallen into recession again after it shrank 0.8% on an annualised basis in the third quarter.
The preliminary data means the world's third-largest economy has contracted for a second consecutive quarter, marking a technical recession.
Growth was expected to decline after it fell a revised 0.7% in the second quarter on weak domestic demand.
Japan has been in recession four times since the global financial crisis.
On a quarterly basis, growth fell 0.2% in the third quarter from the previous one, weaker than forecasts of a 0.1% decline.

早くも街中にはイルミネーションやツリーなどが設置され、クリスマスが近づいていることに気づかされます。レストランやデパート、カフェなどに行けば、クリスマスソングが聴こえてきます。
本日は、そのような街中に溢れるBGMに関しての記事より、表現を取り上げたいと思います。
筆者は本文の中で街にありふれたポップミュージックなどのBGMを人間味のないものとし、異常なまでに街中に溢れるBGMの弊害などを述べています。

『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると、"banal"は「《非難して》陳腐な、ありふれた、つまらない」という意味があります。
またOALD(8th edition) には
"(disapproving) very ordinary and containing nothing that is interesting or important" とありました。
ODにより、語源を調べて見ますと
Mid 18th century (originally relating to feudal service in the sense 'compulsory', hence 'common to all')
とあります。18世紀半ば、封建制においての義務としての奉仕 から意味が派生しているとあります。
本文においては何度か同様の表現が用いられています。

見出しのmarriageを取り上げます。これは「結婚」ではなく、「（人・物事の）密接な結合、融合、合体」（--“a close union between two things”MED2）という意味です。この場合は、上の説明にもある通り、「経営統合」ということであると考えます。
『英語語源辞典』（研究社）には1300年頃「夫婦関係」という意味が最初に起こり、1375年以前に「結婚式」という意味が起こったと書かれております。その後、この記事の意味に近い「〖神学〗融合、合一」という意味が誕生したのが1380年とされており、「融合、合一」という意味が普及し始めたのが、1440年であろうとされているようです。おそらく、「〖神学〗融合、合一」という意味から「融合、合一」という意味に転じたということだと考えられます。（Kawada）

先日、パリで起こったテロに関する記事からです。夕方の某ニュース番組で耳にした表現をとりあげます。
NEW YORK — At first glance on Saturday, New York’s Penn Station looked like it always does, crammed with people rushing to be somewhere else, many of them clustering under the departures sign and waiting for their track to be called. On second glance, you would have seen the soldiers.
They were arrayed around the concourse in camouflage uniforms, bulked out with body armor. One leaned against a wall with an assault rifle clutched to his chest, barrel down. They were there in case terrorists showed up.
Security has tightened because Penn Station is an example of what is known, chillingly, as a “soft target.” It is a gathering place for civilians. There are no metal detectors, no checkpoints where you have to take off your belt and shoes. Civilians are expected to help with security by being alert. “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS OR UNUSUAL SAY SOMETHING!” reads the safety card tucked into seat-back pockets on Amtrak trains.
But when fear takes hold, everything is suspicious, everything unusual. Eccentricities that might once have been charming can be unnerving. That heavyset, raggedy guy walking around the concourse, talking to himself, making eye contact with strangers. Lunatic? Undercover cop? Or just a guy walking off a hangover?
それは“soft target”です。今回、少なくとも６カ所が襲撃を受けました。いずれもテロ対策が難しいソフトターゲット（競技場周辺、ホテル、劇場など）と呼ばれる場所です。番組内でその道の専門家は「無防備な警備のゆるい場所」と説明をしていました。
辞書を確認してみると、「soft target : 格好の標的、餌食（無防備な民間人など）」とありました（『Wisdom英和辞典第３版』三省堂）。英英では、“a person or thing that is easy to attack or criticize --- LDOCE”と定義されています。最近の日本をみてみると、ソフトターゲットが狙われた事件に「地下鉄サリン事件」があります。（Chris）

フランス空軍がイスラム国の事実上の首都である"ラッカ"に空爆を行いました。これはISが犯行声明を出したパリの連続襲撃事件以降、初の空爆となったということです。

Rodney Brooks氏が発明した商業用ロボットが紹介されております。このロボットは，従来のものと異なり，操作をアイフォン並みに簡単にしたそうです。工場にロボットを導入するには，複雑なプログラムを組む必要があり，専門知識を有する人しか使えず，敷居が高いことが課題でした。
記事の中で気になった単語は"nimbly"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「はしっこく, すばやく, 敏速に」などという意味がありました。ODには"In a nimble way"と定義されております。ODによると，"nimble"は"Quick and light in movement or action; agile"という意味です。"nimble"をネットで検索すると重電メーカーのニンブルストレージという商品が最初にヒットしました。拘束でデータの読み込み書き込みが出来るため，"nimble"という表現を用いたのだと思います。（Ume）

Rethink Robotics started selling Baxter the robot for just $25,000 in 2012. Baxter was designed to work nimbly alongside humans in factories, able to change tasks and move easily around the factory floor when tasks changed.
Sawyer, their other robot costs $29,000 and is now for sale around the world. Recently Rethink Robotics struck a deal with Shanghai Electric which will distribute the machines in China.
