2日目の勉強会が終了いたしました。UG先生、2日間に渡り、貴重な時間を割いてご指導いただきありがとうございました。
本日はGP先輩の模擬授業を受けましたが、授業の進め方が大変上手く、とても感動いたしました。それと同時に私も先輩のようになりたいと思いました。
今の私の力では到底UGゼミ卒業生の先輩方には敵いませんが、私もあと2年間UG先生の下で学ばせていただき、先輩方に少しでも追いつけるよう、日々精進していきたいと思っております。
話は変わりますが、本日取り上げる表現は今回の授業で扱われたtwo-timerです。｢ジーニアス英和辞典 第４版｣には、「裏切り者、浮気者」という意味が載っていましたが、「二股」をかけるという意味でも使えるそうです。今回の授業では「浮気をする」でという意味ではなく、「同時に二つのことをこなす」という”to make two thing running at the same time”の意味で扱われました。
UG先生をはじめ、GP先輩、Othello先輩、MG大学の皆様、ゼミ生のみんな、2日間ありがとうございました。これからもUG先生や先輩方の力を借りながら、ゼミ生で協力し合い、英語力を向上させていきたいと思っております。
これからもご迷惑をおかけしてしまうと思いますが、精一杯頑張っていきますので、今後ともどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。2日間本当にありがとうございました。（Haramii）
勉強会感想：Othello篇
本日、UGゼミ春のセッション大会が終了しました。UG先生、大変お忙しいにもかかわらず、このような機会を設けてくださりありがとうございました。今回感じたことは、書ききれないくらいありますが、このエントリーでは２点に絞って記したいと思います。
まずは、私の英語についてです。私は、まだまだ英語力が足りず、しかも英語文化に関する知識が偏っていることが問題であると感じました。これは、最後の先生のご講義の途中で何度も感じました。偉大なる先人に少しでも近づけるよう、今は先生から頂いたお言葉をしっかりと胸に刻み、まだまだ荒削りで犯罪級の私の英語から、大人の英語を鋳造して行きたいと思います。そのためにも、今は自分のやらなければいけないことをしっかりと熟したいと決意しました。
次いで指導力および人間力についてです。今回友人のGPくんの模擬授業に参加させて頂きました。そこで感じたのは、彼の全身から発せられるパワーと教室全体を包み込むような温かさです。きっと彼の受け持つ生徒は、その人間味を肌で感じているのでしょう。きっと英語が好きになるはずです。彼の語りかけは、人を起こします。私も今日、肌で感じました。そんな優しい人柄は指導力となって彼の強みになったのでしょう。GPくんに少しでも近づけるよう、何か始めなければ、という気持ちにさせられました。
これからの２点に気付くことができたのも、UG先生を始めSy先生、GPくん、MG大学の皆様、ゼミ生の皆様、DKくんからたくさんの刺激を受けたからです。厚く厚くお礼申し上げます。最後になりましたが、これからも、ご迷惑ご心配ばかりかけるかもしれませんが、今後ともよろしくお願い申し上げます。素晴らしい２日間をありがとうございました。(Othello)
pestilence
一昨日のIHTにあった記事です。pestilenceは「疫病、ペスト」ですが、「やっかりなもの、悩ましいもの」という比喩的な意味がありますのでチェックしてください。なお、カタカナの影響で「ペスト」＝「pest」と結んでしまいがちですが、「疫病、ペスト」を表すもともとの語はpestilenceです。（UG）

YAKUSHIMA, Japan — A mysterious pestilence has befallen this island’s primeval forests, leaving behind the bleached, skeletal remains of dead trees that now dot the dark green mountainsides. 米資産運用会社 ＭＲＩインターナショナルが客から預かった資金を消失した問題で、同社が顧客に対しと虚偽の説明をしていたことが分かりました。監視委は、同社が顧客の信用を高めるため「出資金は第三者機関の名義で開設された口座で管理している」と嘘の宣伝文句で騙し、架空の第三者機関があるように装っていたとみて調べています。
この「開設された口座」にあたるのがlock box account「私書箱口座」です。（UG）
MRI gave false explanation about fund management to clients
U.S. asset management firm MRI International Inc., which is suspected of mishandling clients' funds, gave false explanations that their funds were to be managed safely in a special account under U.S. banking law, some clients and other parties involved said Saturday.
According to its brochures for investors, the Nevada-based company said clients' funds were to be put in a "lock box account" opened at major U.S. bank Wells Fargo and that the funds were safe as they could be used only for trading "MARS," a securitization product based on medical institutions' claims on insurance companies.
The suspected mishandling of funds is believed to have resulted in losses totaling more than 130 billion yen.

Tokyo Gov. Inose dismisses accusation over reported remarks on Istanbul
Tokyo Gov. Naoki Inose on Monday brushed aside accusations that he criticized Istanbul, one of Tokyo's rival bidders for the 2020 Olympics, in a recent interview with the New York Times.
The newspaper's story "accused me of criticizing a rival city but what I intended to convey was not accurately reflected in the article," Inose said in a statement.
Inose issued the statement after Tokyo's bid committee for the 2020 Summer Games expressed regret earlier Monday about the reported remarks by him. "It's extremely disappointing a story like this has come out," Tokyo spokesman Tokuaki Suzuki said. "We will play by the rules, and take the utmost precaution to avoid any kind of comparison with the other candidates and make sure no one is portrayed in a negative light...We will respect our competition."
The IOC prohibits bid candidates from criticizing or comparing themselves with the other cities. Tokyo is vying with Istanbul and Madrid for the right to host the 2020 Summer Games, and the winner will be announced on Sept. 7 at the IOC assembly in Buenos Aires.
In the interview published Friday, Inose said, "Well, compare the two countries where they have yet to build infrastructure, very sophisticated facilities."
"So, from time to time, like Brazil, I think it's good to have a venue for the first time. But Islamic countries, the only thing they have in common is Allah and they are fighting with each other, and they have classes," the governor was quoted as saying.
But in his latest statement he countered the accusation, saying, "I have been to Turkey and Istanbul is one of my favorite cities."
"I don't have the slightest idea of making critical comments on other bidding cities," he added.
"It is extremely regrettable that "The (New York Times) story deviates from the context of the interview," Inose added.
The IOC responded to Inose by slapping Tokyo on the wrist.
"It is not entirely clear from the translation what exactly the governor was trying to say, but we would remind all candidates of the rules pertaining to the bid process," the IOC said in a statement.
Turkish sports minister Suat Kilic tweeted that the Tokyo bid committee chairman violated the Olympic spirit.
"It's very disappointing," Kilic said. "It goes against the spirit of the Olympic movement. We have never been critical of the other cities and we are not about to start."

アメリカは第二次世界大戦後には戦争に勝った国としてさらに力をつけました。The Economistには、アメリカと第二次世界大戦の関係性、アメリカとヨーロッパ各国の関係性についての記事がありました。

赤字のthe chips are downです。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を参考にすると「(くだけた言い方で)いざと言うときは」という訳語が当てはまります。ここで言うchipとは「ギャンブルなどの数取り札」のことを言います。つまり「全然儲かる見込みのない時」という意味合いを見出すことができます。
同じような意味のフレーズにwhen push comes to the shoveというものもありますが、こちらも「いざとなれば」という訳語が当てはまります。
記事に戻れば冒頭の箇所は「「いざとなれば、英国と米国はお互いに助け合うことができる」と、デイヴィッド・キャメロン首相が昨年ワシントン訪問の際に宣言した。」となるでしょう。(Othello)

赤字のtalismanicという単語に注目します。こちらは『リーダーズ英和辞典』によると「お守り、護符、魔除け(福を招き厄を払う符合を刻んだ石・指輪など；作った時に優勢であった天体の影響による効験を有するとされる；不思議な力のあるもの、お守りみたいなもの)」とあります。つまり、記事では「核保有国もしくは勝戦国アメリカが他の国々から護られる目に見えない力」と捉えることができます。つまり、「戦後70年において、英国が米国に[開戦した時にお互いを守るような]特別な関係を要求しても、何事もあの眼に見えない不思議な力には匹敵することはない」となります。
それでもやはり気になるのは、語源。Oxford English Dictionaryで調べてみると名詞形のtalismanは、17世紀にフランス、スペイン、ポルトガル語のtalisman、イタリア語のtalismanoから英語になり、元はアラブ語のtilsma、ギリシャ語のτέλεσμαから来た言葉であることがわかりました。英語における初出は1638年で、エジプト、ギリシャを神格化した時の文章であるとされています。(Othello)
