big-timeを取り上げます。文脈などから予想してみましたが、力及ばず、わかりませんでした。
そこで、まず『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「最高水準の；成功した、著名な〈人〉；大物の、名うての」とありました。しかし、LDOCEによると、 big-timeの説明にonly before nounとあったので、記事の用法とは合いません。LDOCEには、副詞として用いて、“to a very large degree”という定義も載っていました。この定義から考えてみると、ソーシャルメディアなどで、高い関心が持たれていることを表しているのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)

piss off 復習
昨日行われた新ゼミ生との勉強会で学んだ表現を取り上げます。文法に関する活動としては英作文に取り組み、短文の英文を書きましたが、その中の問題に「人が怒る」という表現が含まれていました。その場でぱっと思いつくのはangryだけでしたが、他にもpiss off という言い方ができるとUG先生に教えていただきました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くと、自動詞としては「（英卑語）（普通は命令文で）立ち去る、失せる」、他動詞としては「（普通は受身で）（かんかんに）怒らせる」という意味がそれぞれ見つかりました。後者の場合は主に口語で使われるようです。
LDOCEには “piss somebody off” で “to annoy someone very much” と定義されています。 “spoken not polite” と説明されているように、公の場では使われないことがわかりました。
親しい間柄の友人などと話すときに使うことはできますが、pissの意味を踏まえると、使う際には注意が必要になるそうです。上記の英和辞典にはpissedという形容詞の形も載っており、「1（しばしばoffを伴って）（米俗）頭にきて 2（俗、主に英）酔っぱらって」とありました。アメリカ英語とイギリス英語では意味の捉え方が変わってくる表現であることにも注意して覚えておきたいです。（aqua）

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では動詞の意味で「...を勢いよく放り出す、...を突然(ある状態に)する、勢いよく動く」とあります。また、LDOCEには “to push or throw something very hard so that it moves through the air very quickly” と定義されています。 “catapult someone to fame/stardom” で “to make suddenly someone very famous” ともありました。Oxford Living DictionariesではLate 16th century: from French catapulte or Latin catapulta, from Greek katapeltēs, from kata- ‘down’ + pallein ‘hurl’.と語源が載っていました。

また新たなChapterがはじまりました。昨日は終日、initiation ceremony、そして親睦会。彼らはどんな物語を紡ぐのか、楽しみです。

本日は新ゼミ生が加わり、大学で勉強会を行いました。その中で気になった表現を拾います。それが “learn a lesson” です。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(過去の行いから)教訓を得る」とあります。また、Merriam-Websterでは “to understand something because of an unpleasant experience, esp. when this means you will not do it again” と定義されています。
私も後輩と接していく中で、先輩の意識を持ち、頑張って行かなければという思いに、改めて火がつきました。ここから、また一つ歩んでいきます。(seventh-dan)

取り上げるのは、bar /bάɚ/ です。「酒場、バー」が最初に思い浮かびますが、ここでは違う意味で使われているようです。
LDOCEで引いてみると、the barで、“an organization consisting of lawyers”とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には「弁護士業、法曹界、法廷弁護士（団）、弁護士」と載っていました。
