entourage 復習

　熊本県山鹿市で「千人灯籠踊り」が行われました。約千人の女性が和紙でできた灯籠を頭に乗せ、輪になって踊りを披露しました。

1,000 dancers with lanterns cast eerie glow in Kumamoto

About 1,000 female dancers clad in yukata with shining “toro” lanterns on their heads cast a mysterious glow while weaving during the Yamaga Lantern Festival here on Aug. 19.
As the dancers moved gracefully in synch to a local "minyo" folk song called the "Yoheho-bushi," the lights in gold-colored Japanese "washi" paper lanterns on their heads flickered in the darkness.

The summer festival is said to trace back to a historical event in the Muromachi Period (1338-1573) involving the 12th emperor, Keiko. When the emperor's path across a river in Kyushu was blocked by thick fog, local residents saved the day by guiding the entourage with flaming torches, according to the legend.

　entourage /ὰːntʊrάːʒ/ を取り上げます。人を表しているのはわかりますが、あまりよくわからなかったため、さっそく調べてみました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「（フランス語から）側近の人々、随員たち」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a group of people who travel with an important person” と定義されています。重要人物の旅路にお供をする人々というイメージがわきます。

　上記の英和辞典で、語源はフランス語であることが確認できました。そして、goo辞書には「取り囲む」という意味のentourerという言葉からきていると説明されています。これは、「周囲」という意味のentourの派生語で、enは中、tourは巡回をそれぞれ表すとのことでした。（aqua）
