　gaffe /gˈæf/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「（社交上の）失策、へま、思慮のない言行」とありました。LDOCEでは“an embarrassing mistake made in a social situation or in public”と定義されています。
　フランス語が語源だそうです。gaffeに-erをつけたgafferという単語もあります。「良く失敗をしてしまう人」という意味かなと思いましたが、「（映画・テレビスタジオの）主任電気技師、照明係」や「（労働者の）親方、監督」や「（田舎の）じいさん」という意味だそうです。そしてgaffeと同じ読み方でgaffというものもあります。こちらはイギリスのスラングで「住みか」という意味です。(rain)
