custodian/kʌstóudiən/を取り上げます。customと似ているので先に語源を確認しました。しかしcustomは中英語のcostumeから、custodian はラテン語のcustodia（警備、防衛、監視、管理、保管）からきているので関係ないようです。

　次に『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くと「（公共物の）管理者;［遠回しに］守衛(janitor)」「保管銀行」「〔…の〕後見人、保護者、擁護者〔over〕」とあります。 今回は3番目の意味で使われています。
　またLDOCEで調べると“someone who is responsible for looking after something important or valuable” “especially AmE someone who looks after a public building”と定義されていました。(Kiwi girl)
