今回取り上げる単語は、flatulenceです。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 flatulentで “suffering from or marked by an accumulation of gas in the alimentary canal”とのことでした。また “inflated or pretentious in speech or writing”という定義も載っておりました。
語源はラテン語で “blowing”を表すflatusからきているそうです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「虚勢，仰々しさ」や「（腸内に）ガスがたまること，鼓腸（による不快感）」と定義されておりました。
今回の記事では、「おなら」をオブラートに包んだ言い方としてflatulenceを使用しているのかなと考えました。
