清水寺の本堂は修理のため、来春にも素屋根（すやね）と呼ばれる屋根修理の足場で覆われるそうです。

Scaffolding will cover the main hall of Kiyomizudera temple here as early as next spring, marring picturesque views of the World Heritage site as it undergoes its most extensive repair work in four centuries.

However, during the work, which is expected to be completed by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, visitors will still be able to worship in the main hall.

The temple will also keep the Buddhist statues at the same places and offer Buddhist memorial services and other rituals as usual.

今回取り上げるのはpicturesque /ˌpɪktʃəˈresk/ です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べますと、「1（場所などが）絵のように美しい　2（ことば、表現などが）生き生きとした、真に迫った、生々しい、あけすけ（露骨）な　3（人、態度、服装などが）風変わりな、異様な」とあり、使い方によってはプラスの意味にもマイナスの意味にもなることがわかりました。Merriam-Websterには “very pretty or charming : like a painted picture” や “telling about something in a way that makes it very easy to imagine : causing someone to have a very clear mental picture of something” と定義されております。
今回は1つ目の「場所が絵のように美しい」という意味で用いられており、違うことばで表すとすると、「絵に描いたような」となるかと思われます。（aqua）
