一口にラーメンといっても地域によってスタイルは違うものなのですね。その中でも九州地方の味が次々と海外へ広まっています。
Kyushu chains serving up more ‘tonkotsu’ ramen overseas
The exporting of Kyushu-style “tonkotsu ramen” is picking up steam, as restaurant chains hope the noodles served in white broth derived from pork bone prove as popular overseas as in Japan.
The Fukuoka-based Ichiran ramen chain plans to set up shop in the United States, while the Kumamoto-based operator of Ajisen Ramen is eyeing Italy for expansion.
The Ippudo chain, also based in Fukuoka, already announced it would begin operations in Myanmar next spring, while the Yamagoya chain, based in Kawara in Fukuoka Prefecture, established its first outlet in London in September.
The brands have built up financial strength, but they expect limited leeway for further expansion in the Japanese market.
The Ichiran chain will open an outlet in the Brooklyn borough of New York City at lunch time on Oct. 19.

今回取り上げる表現はleewayです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べますと、不可算名詞で「（活動の）余地、裁量の範囲」という意味が見つかりました。Merriam-Websterには “freedom to do something the way you want to do it” と定義されており、自分の好きなようにできることというニュアンスがあるようです。
語源を調べると、lee＋wayという成り立ちであることがわかりました。leeには風を避ける物陰や風下という意味があるため、lee＋wayで風当たりのない方法というイメージから上記のような意味になったのではないかと思われました。
