今回取り上げるのは、quay /kíː/ です。意味が予測できなかったため、調べて見ました。
まず、LDOCEで意味を引いてみると、“a place in a town or village where boats can be tied up or can stop to load and unload goods” とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「岸壁、埠頭、波止場（船客の乗降や貨物の積み降ろしの場）」と載っていました。発音に関しては、「鍵」の“key” と同音であると記載してありました。
続いて、『オックスフォード新英英辞典』で語源を調べてみると、“late Middle English key, from Old French kay, of Celtic origin. The change of spelling in the late 17th cent. was influenced by the modern French spelling quai.” と定義されていました。過去のブログにも取り上げられています。（Otoyo）

one’s grip onを取り上げます。gripといえば「握る」という意味の動詞ですが、名詞だとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、第2義に「≪…に対する≫支配(力)、影響(力)；≪人などを≫引き付ける力、牽引力≪on, of≫」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“power and control over someone or something”と定義されています。記事ではtheir grip on the throneとあるので、去年の日本シリーズ王者としての貫禄といった意味で使われているのだと思います。簡単な単語ですが、こういった使い方はしていなかったので、しっかりとマスターしておきます。(Blue Sky)
razzle-dazzle 復習
今回紹介するのは razzle-dazzle /ˈraz(ə)ldaz(ə)l/ です。この単語は現在履修しているLinguisticsのpartial reduplicationの例として挙げられており、初めの予測としてdazzleが「目が眩む」となることは既知だったので「刺激の強いもの」と解釈したしました。以下で定義等の確認に入ります。
初めにCollins English Dictionaryを引くと、“noisy or showy fuss or activity.”とありました。
次にCambridge English Dictionaryで調べると、“(confusion caused by) noisy and noticeable activity or very colorful appearance, intended to attract attention.” と載っていました。
まとめると、razzle-dazzleは「どんちゃん騒ぎ、見せびらかし」と訳せるのではないでしょうか。過去の投稿で紹介したwishy-washyなども同じ類の表現だと思われます。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）cf. stupendous

今回取り上げるのはout of whackです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』でまずwhackを調べると「…を強く打つ」「…を山分けする」「…を負かす」「〈仕事・お金などの〉量，額」など様々な意味を持つことがわかりました。out of whackは「〈人・物・事が〉具合が悪い;〔…と〕一致しない」とあります。
『オックスフォード新英英辞典』で調べると南アメリカやオーストラリア、ニュージーランドでout of whackはour of order, not workingと同等の意味を表すことがわかりました。(Kiwi girl)

今回はstress outを取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「〈人〉を緊張させる、〈人〉の神経をすり減らす」とありました。LDOCEではto make someone so worried or nervous that they cannot relaxと定義されています。
これを使って「ストレスが溜まっている」をI’m stressed out.と表現することができます。I’m stressed.でも通じるようですが、outを付けた方が自然だそうです。(rain)
