Reclamation work hits road bump with unusable port

NAHA--Land reclamation work related to relocating a U.S. base appears to have hit gridlock again, despite the central government's determination to forge ahead with the project that has inflamed local sentiment.

中略

The latest hurdle was caused by Typhoon No. 24 when it ripped through Okinawa in late September and damaged quays at Motobu port.

今回取り上げるのは、quay /kíː/ です。意味が予測できなかったため、調べて見ました。

まず、LDOCEで意味を引いてみると、“a place in a town or village where boats can be tied up or can stop to load and unload goods” とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「岸壁、埠頭、波止場(船客の乗降や貨物の積み降ろしの場)」と載っていました。発音に関しては、「鍵」の“key” と同音であると記載してありました。

続いて、『オックスフォード新英英辞典』で語源を調べてみると、“late Middle English key, from Old French kay, of Celtic origin. The change of spelling in the late 17th cent. was influenced by the modern French spelling quai.” と定義されていました。過去のブログにも取り上げられています。(Otoyo)
