Eye doctor reaches out to nearsighted Pokemon Go players

Every business seems to have an opinion on Pokemon Go, from asking players to respectfully keep their distance to picking favorites from the three teams. And then there are the puns.

Case in point is the Brandon Eye Clinic in Springdale, Arkansas, which reached out to any Pokemon Go players having trouble seeing their screen (or things, people or ponds in front of them). If you have good enough vision, see for yourself:

"Is your Pokemon blurry?" the sign reads, "Let us have a Pikachu." And with all the injuries lately (as uncommon as they may be) it may be necessary to evolve your vision, lest you faint from an accidental tackle.

So keep in mind, if the following image looks normal to you, then you may actually need an eye doctor.

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “blur”で “a thing that cannot be seen or heard clearly”とのことで、 “blurry”はその形容詞系です。

(Gomez)

Lefty left on edge with 63 at Open

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Phil Mickelson was 16 feet away from a place in history he wouldn’t have to share with anyone.

Fans watched from a rooftop balcony. Royal Troon members strained to see out the window from the clubhouse behind the 18th green. Jack Nicklaus usually doesn’t watch golf on TV, but he made an exception for this moment.

中略

Mickelson pointed his putter toward the hole and was ready to step into history Thursday in the British Open when his birdie putt turned sharply to the right at the mouth of the hole, just enough to ride the edge around the back of the cup and sit there, teasing him.

“You made a beautiful read and putt on that last hole but got absolutely stone-cold robbed,” Nicklaus said in a message on Facebook.

Lefty plopped his hand on his face in disbelief. His caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, was so stunned that he fell over backward.

“It was one of the best rounds I’ve ever played ... and yet I want to shed a tear right now,” Mickelson said. “That putt on 18 was an opportunity to do something historical. I knew it, and with a foot to go I thought I had done it. I saw that ball rolling right in the center. I went to go get it. I had that surge of adrenaline that I had just shot 62, and then I had the heartbreak that I didn’t.”

Oxford-Dictionaries.com には a.

(Cayu)

tag along

You don't have to apologize. I'm just tagging along."

(Akim)

sack #3

(Ume)

Turkish crowds rally to democracy calls after coup attempt

Large crowds have gathered in Istanbul and other cities after calls by Turkish authorities to defend democracy after the failed military coup.
Less than 24 hours earlier thousands turned out to help rebuff the plot.
President Erdogan wants the extradition of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen over the plot. But Mr Gulen rejects any suggestion of links to what happened.
Nearly 3,000 soldiers have been detained and some 2,700 judges sacked as the government re-asserts power.
Generals are reported to be among those detained.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim called the coup attempt a "black stain on Turkish democracy".

a safe pair of hands

A conventional choice
Trump's selection of Pence -- who is seen as a safe pair of hands in Washington -- was one of the most conventional steps the billionaire has taken in an unorthodox campaign.
But his pick lost much of the political impact that campaigns normally try to build around a vice presidential selection due to a disorganized and leak-prone process. It revealed a candidate second-guessing himself over his decision and a campaign that doesn't seem ready for prime-time.
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/07/16/politics/donald-trump-mike-pence-campaign-trail/index.html

今回取り上げる表現は,“a safe pair of hands”です。 Merriam-Websterを見てみると,“someone who can be trusted with responsibility or a job”と記載されていました。

The Phrase Finderによると,“UK origin. Applied to politicians or diplomats who were given sensitive work that required careful handling.” また,関連した表現に,“another [an extra] pair of hands”で「手助けする,助っ人」があります。 (Nao)

cleric

Pakistani model killed after offending conservatives

ISLAMABAD--Pakistani fashion model Qandeel Baloch, who recently stirred controversy by posting pictures of herself with a Muslim cleric on social media, was strangled to death by her brother, police said Saturday.
Her parents told police one of her six brothers strangled her to death as she slept in the family's home in Multan, police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar told The Associated Press. She said police are searching for the suspect.
Baloch, whose real name was Fauzia Azeem, was little known until recently, when she offended many conservatives by posting pictures of herself with Mufti Qavi, a prominent cleric. She said the two of them enjoyed soft drinks and cigarettes together during the daylight hours in the holy month of Ramadan, when practicing Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.
The pictures and allegations caused a scandal in conservative Pakistan, and the government removed Qavi from the official moon-sighting committee that determines when Ramadan starts and ends in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar.
Baloch had said Qavi told her he wanted to see her face before the committee met to determine the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan, which was observed earlier this month.
Qavi denied the allegations, saying he only met with her to discuss the teachings of Islam.
Earlier this month, Baloch sought protection from government, saying she was receiving anonymous death threats.
Hundreds of Pakistani woman are murdered by family members each year in so-called honor killings, which are seen as punishment for violating conservative norms.

Oxford dictionaries.com.では“A priest or religious leader, especially a Christian or Muslim one.”

(flyingbird)

kowtow to #2

Why Japanese media still kowtow to Ken Takakura

“Ken San” is a new documentary about late actor Ken Takakura opening in local theaters next month. Described as Japan’s “greatest” and “last” movie star, Takakura was respected by both the Japanese people who worked with him and international film giants such as Martin Scorsese, John Woo and Paul Schrader. The star quality they identified in Takakura was, as Scorsese puts it, his “presence” both on and off the screen — a kind of “aura,” as one Japanese character actor described it. Though he was just a man, a fallible human, the personality Takakura conveyed in his movies transcended his imperfections, and he worked hard to make sure his “aura” outlived him.

この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“to be too eager to obey or be polite to someone in authority”と定義されていました。 (ninetails)

the land of make-believe #2

Kitchen pretend toy set provides kids with sensory joys of cooking

Playing house just got further from the land of make-believe, thanks to a play kitchen that gives the kiddies an experience that feels and smells as if they are actually cooking.

Developed by telecommunications giant KDDI Corp. and beverage giant Kirin Co., the “Mama Digi” prototype toy set features various sensors that detect each movement of users to produce the sounds of a knife cutting and simulate steam rising from a pot.

“make-believe”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“when you imagine or pretend that something is real or true”と定義されていました。 (ninetails)

Boeing aims for supersonics and Mars at outset of second century

The Boeing Co marked its centennial on Friday with plans to sharpen its focus on innovation, including ambitious projects for supersonic commercial flight and a rocket that could carry humans to other planets.

But innovation at Boeing will be "disciplined" and not endanger the future of the world's biggest plane maker, Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg told reporters at an event marking the company's founding on July 15, 1916.

The enterprise established by William Boeing in a Seattle boathouse has faced numerous "bet the company" moments over its 10 decades to bring out new planes such as the 707 and 747.

"We have won for 100 years because of innovation," Muilenburg said. "The key is disciplined innovation. We'll take risks. We'll invest smartly."

Chicago-based Boeing has managed to stay ahead of European rival Airbus in plane production and is a major defense and space contractor, producing fighter jets, aerial refueling tankers, communications satellites and rockets.

The company is exploring the possibilities of commercial supersonic and hypersonic planes, Muilenburg said. It also is at work on a manned mission to Mars. Though those are perhaps many decades away, "I'm anticipating that person will be riding on a Boeing rocket," Muilenburg said.

More immediately, Boeing is pressing for licenses to conclude sales of 109 aircraft to Iran, including leased jets, despite opposition from some in Congress. "This is a significant opportunity," he said. "It does represent significant U.S. manufacturing jobs."

The company also is still working on plans for a so-called "middle of the market" aircraft that could fill a gap in its product line between the 737 and the 787. Muilenburg said it might use "existing products, derivatives of existing products or an all new airplane" to fill the gap.

"If it's an all new airplane, we think that would probably be in the 2024-2025 time frame in terms of when it would be introduced into service," he said.

Muilenburg spoke with reporters at the beginning of a celebratory weekend of events for an estimated 100,000 employees, families and retirees at Boeing Field in Seattle.

Muilenburg said Boeing is arguably stronger now than at any point in its 100-year history. It has a backlog of 5,700 plane orders, enough to keep its factories humming for six or seven years.

Beyond filling those orders, it aims to "sharpen and accelerate" its innovation, in plane design in the factory and services. This includes "second-century design in manufacturing, automation, 3-D printing, additive manufacturing," he said.

"Even though we're arguably the best aerospace company in the world today, we have to continue to invest in innovation," he said.

Merriam-Webster.comでは、“the 100th anniversary of something (such as an important event)”と定義されていました。

(Blue Sky)
