Turkey detains Japanese man 'seeking to join Daesh' in Syria
Security forces detained a Japanese citizen on suspicion of seeking to cross the border into Syria to join the Daesh terror organization, Turkish media outlets reported.
The 24-year-old man, whose name was given only as M.M., was detained late on Tuesday in the Nizip district of the southern city of Gaziantep, close to the Syrian border.
According to Doğan News Agency (DHA), he had admitted to wanting to travel to Syria after getting to know an unnamed contact by telephone and then agreeing to cross the frontier. He will be deported from Turkey back to Japan once the investigation is completed, DHA added. It said he was detained during a routine check by the gendarmerie while being driven toward the border settlement of Karkamış.

Microsoftが会話理解研究のために公開した人工知能botの「Tay」が、ユーザーに教えこまれた人種差別などの問題のある単語をツイートするようになり、Twitterでのデビュー数時間後に停止となりました。
Microsoft’s attempt at engaging millennials with artificial intelligence has backfired hours into its launch, with waggish Twitter users teaching its chatbot how to be racist.
The company launched a verified Twitter account for “Tay” – billed as its “AI fam from the internet that’s got zero chill” – early on Wednesday.
“Tay is designed to engage and entertain people where they connect with each other online through casual and playful conversation,” Microsoft said. “The more you chat with Tay the smarter she gets.”
But it appeared on Thursday that Tay’s conversation extended to racist, inflammatory and political statements. Her Twitter conversations have so far reinforced the so-called Godwin’s law – that as an online discussion goes on, the probability of a comparison involving the Nazis or Hitler approaches – with Tay having been encouraged to repeat variations on “Hitler was right” as well as “9/11 was an inside job”.
"millennials"を取り上げます。「英辞郎on the Web」によると「ミレニアル/（ム）世代」という1980年前後から2005年ごろにかけて生まれた新世紀世代と呼ばれるもので、10代からデジタル環境になじんだ世代のことを指していることがわかりました。
「Tay」は一般のユーザーとの会話を繰り返すことで学習し、成長していくということですが、今回起きた問題はツイッターユーザーのうちの誰かが人種差別的発言を教えこませたために、良し悪しを判断できず起きてしまったということです。(lua)

小〜高までは春休みだと思いますが、大学はもうはじまっているのですよ。うちも３，４年性のオリエンテーションが本日、初日を迎えました。
そのオリエンテーション（orientation--"information or training that you are given before you start a new job or activity"）ということば。
おそらくネットをググレばどこかにあると思いますが、これはもともと、われわれの(the) Orientに関係します（ラテン語 oriens→direction of the rising sun）。もっとも当時のアングロサクソンの「東方」には日本ははいっていなかったと思いますが…（ゆえにFar Eastということばが後に生まれた）。
ともあれ、「日の出する」この国にはぴったりのイニシエーション用語かもしれません。（UG）

中国とトランプ氏について書かれた記事です。中国ではトランプ氏の豪快さや贅沢な生活に対する評価が高いようです。例えば中国企業には,トランプマネジメント・コンサルティング,トランプインダストリーやトランプエレクトロニクスなど,トランプ氏とは全く関係ないが,彼の名前を使う企業が多く存在するようです。企業名にも使われていることから,トランプ氏が大統領選挙に出馬する前でも,中国では名前の知られた存在であったようです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"flamboyant"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）で調べると「＜性格･行動などが＞派手な, 華々しい, 自信に満ちて大胆な, 異彩を放つ,＜服装などが＞派手な, 人目を引く」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"(Of a person or their behaviour) tending to attract attention because of their exuberance, confidence, and stylishness"と定義されております。フランス語に由来し,"flaming, blazing"の現在分詞が"flamboyer"でした（Oxford Dictionaries.com）。この辺りから生じた単語のようです。（Ume）
