one for the booksを取り上げます。『クラウン英語イディオム辞典』（三省堂）には，「｟口｠特筆すべきもの，注目すべきもの，得意なもの」（“US(UK turn-up for the book(s)) a surprising or unexpected event”-- Cambridge Dictionaries Online）とありました。
なぜ，この表現が「驚き，注目すべきこと」を意味するようになったのかが気になりましたので，インターネットに頼ることにしました。The Phrase Finderは，18-19世紀の競馬の勝ち馬の予想の仕方，賭け金の分配の仕方に注目しています。当時は勝ち馬を予想して，その賭けの代表者のノートに予想した馬の名前と自分の名前を書きます。予想が外れてしまった場合は，代表者が賭け金を総取りするというものでした。turn-up自体は1820年代に「驚くべき出来事」使われていたようで，トランプゲームの1つである「クリベッジ」から来たとしています。
ここまでで考えると，この季節の異様な暑さは，気象予報士以外で誰もが予想していなかった現象なのでしょう。（Kawada）

one-off show 復習
現在、元夫と息子の親権争いをしているマドンナが、メルボルンで息子の写真をバックに涙ながらに公演を行いました。

今回取り上げるのは、“one-off show”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“British English happening or done only once, not as part of a regular series”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』（大修館書店）でも確認してみると、「｟英｠1回〔1個〕限りの」といった意味が記載されていました。また、この表現はイギリス英語ですが、アメリカ英語では“one-shot”が上記の意味に対応していることも分かりました。2つ併せて覚えておきたいです。(ninetails)

Celebrity dog whisperer Cesar Millan is under investigation over allegations of animal cruelty.
Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is looking into complaints originating with an episode of Millan's Nat Geo Wild series, "Cesar 911," Aaron Reyes, the agency's deputy director, confirmed to CNN.
"In the video, someone has taken a pig and holds its rear leg in the air while another animal, a dog, runs to attack it," Reyes said. "That, in and of itself, is a penal code animal cruelty violation in the state of California, but the office still needs to investigate the circumstances."

この表現は，副詞ということが分かります。さらに，「英辞郎on the web」には，「それ自体（として）は」とありました。“in itself”よりも文語的であるとも載っていました。ここでは，豚の後ろ脚を持ち上げ、犬がかみつく動画を指します。

東日本大震災から5年が経ちましたが、未だに18万以上もの人々が自分たちの家に帰れず、避難生活を強いられています。
Five years after a devastating tsunami, Japan pauses to remember
Japan paused at 2:46 p.m. Friday, the exact moment when, five years earlier, a magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck off the northeast coast, triggering a massive tsunami that claimed more than 18,000 lives.
The disaster led to a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclearplant, which will take 30 or 40 years to decommission, and wiped out towns farther up the northeastern coast of Japan.
Today, these towns, economically depressed and with declining populations, are struggling to rebuild and recover. About 180,000 people remain displaced, with more than a third of them living in temporary housing.
今回取り上げるのは、金曜日の裏ゼミに出てきた “decommission”という表現です。この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“to stop using a ship, weapon, or nuclear reactor and to take it to pieces”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』（大修館書店）でも確認してみると、「〈船・航空機など〉の就役を解く、〜を退役させる」と記載されていました。したがって、原子炉の場合では「廃炉にする、解体する」などと表せます。(ninetails)
春告
学科長という重責も残すところあと僅か。それは２年間にわたって学内のinner workingsにふれる、よい機会となりました。その分、各活動にはおのずと制限がかかり（含むブログ）、教育者・研究者としては忸怩たる思いをしたことが何度もありました。
４月からは重圧から解放され、少しずつ２年前までの生活にもどしていきます（徐々に！）。その先駆けとして、来年度からはNHKラジオ講座のテキスト、それから大修館書店『英語教育』にショートエッセイを１年間、連載させていただきます。両者ともすでに店頭に４月号が出ていますので、駄文をご覧いただけると幸いです。
非常勤の方は単行本の執筆のために、白金台支所のみ継続することにし、早稲田大学での活動には終止符を打ちました。
わたしにとっての「新学期」ははやくも来週のゼミ合宿（伊勢原セミナーハウス）からはじまります。学生は自分を律して、どこまで育ってくれるのでしょうか。それは楽しみでもあります。（UG）

TOKYO -- Japan is getting an influx of visitors, and big cities are not the only places reaping the benefits.
Tourists are spending more time -- and money -- in prefectures that neighbor Tokyo and other major centers. New flight routes have made it easier to reach the numerous small airports that dot the country. The higher traffic is boosting sales at terminal shops, propelling state-run airports back to profitability after years of losses. Inns and other local businesses are doing better, too.

“Brexiter”
過去にイギリスのEU離脱に関するニュースの中で“Brexit”という表現を取り上げましたが，その後調べてみますと，“Brexiter”という表現もあるらしく，定義は“a person who supports Brexit (Britain's leaving the European Union)”(Macmillan Dictionary)となっていました。要するに，ロンドン市長のボリス・ジョンソン氏のような「EU離脱支持者」ということでしょうか。（Kawada）

アラスカで行われた犬ぞりレースで，スノーモービルが突っ込み，競技犬を1匹を殺害しました。スノーモービルを運転していた男は逮捕されました。動機はまだ判明しておりませんが，意図的に行ったようです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"musher"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「犬ぞりを走らせる人」という意味がありました。"mush"で「（雪中で）犬ぞり旅行をする，進め, 急げ｟そりを引く犬へのかけ声｠」という意味がります。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"The driver of a dog sled"と定義されております。"mush"の語源を英辞郎で語源を調べると「犬にかけた掛け声の、marche（フランス語で「進め」「走れ」）から」きたとあります。"mush-er"で「犬に声をかける人」になるのだと思います。（Ume）
Snowmobile 'driven into dog-sleds' in Alaska Iditarod race
One of her dogs was injured. She reported the incident after arriving in Nulato in the early hours of Saturday.
Some time later, competitor Jeff King, who had been following Ms Zirkle, reported being hit by the snowmobile in the same area. One of his dogs was killed and at least three others were injured.
"Regrettably, this incident very much alters the race of the two mushers competing for a win. However, both are going to continue on their way toward Nome," the Iditarod Trail Committee said.
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual event that takes place through some of Alaska's most remote areas between Anchorage and Nome. Competitors and their teams often encounter blizzards, gale-force winds and freezing temperatures.
