HERE’S an apparent paradox: Most Americans have taken high school mathematics, including geometry and algebra, yet a national survey found that 82 percent of adults could not compute the cost of a carpet when told its dimensions and square-yard price. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently tested adults in 24 countries on basic “numeracy” skills. Typical questions involved odometer readings and produce sell-by tags. The United States ended an embarrassing 22nd, behind Estonia and Cyprus. We should be doing better. Is more mathematics the answer?
Something similar occurred when the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching created a statistics course for 19 community colleges in 2012. It was advertised as an alternative to remedial algebra, with its sadistic attrition rates. In Statways, as it was called, here is some of what students were asked to master: chi-square test for homogeneity in two-way tables, line multiple representation of exponential models. Even with small classes and extra support, almost half of the students got D’s or F’s or dropped the class.

The Wrong Way to Teach Math
So I sat in on several advanced placement classes, in Michigan and New York. I thought they would focus on what could be called “citizen statistics.” By this I mean coping with the numbers that suffuse our personal and public lives — like figures cited on income distribution, climate change or whether cellphones can damage your brain. What’s needed is a facility for sensing symptoms of bias, questionable samples and dubious sources of data.
今回取り上げるのは、“sit in on”という表現です。Oxford Dictionaries.comでこの表現を調べてみると、“Attend a meeting or discussion without taking an active part in it”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4』（大修館書店）でも確認してみると、「（授業や討論会などを）見学する〔参観、傍聴する〕」といった意味が記載されていました。他にも上記のような意味の表現はたくさんありますが、この表現には「オブザーバーとして」というニュアンスが含まれています。 (ninetails)
‘photobomb’ 復習
“Flying Scotsman”の愛称で親しまれた英国の蒸気機関車が，10年にわたる修理を経て復活しました。1923年に製造され，ロンドンとスコットランドを結び，長距離列車を牽引してきた機関車です。イギリス人にとっては，その当時のイギリスの発展に貢献した「縁の下の力持ち」（unsung hero）という風に映るのではないかと考えております。
イギリスは，「きかんしゃトーマス」（Thomas and Friends）の生まれ故郷でもありますし，その影響もあるのかと思っております。BBC，The Telegraphの記事（ともに電子版，2016年2月25日付）を読みましたが，「列車が邪魔になってしまった」という記述がどちらの紙面にも見られました。因みに後者の方では，見出しからいきなり「がっくしきた」となっております。
私も子ども（幼稚園児くらい）時代は，電車（と言うよりは乗り物全般）が好きで，よく乗り物に関するビデオを見．電車を近くの駅まで見に行ったものです。私が「撮り鉄」の皆様の1人であったら，Virgin Trainに貴重なシャッターチャンスを奪われた時は，相当悔しいと感じるであろうと考えております。
さて，表現を拾います。今回は，電車だけにThe Express（電子版，2016年2月25日付）からです。今日は，どのようなExpressionが飛び出すのでしょうか。

ここでは，‘photobomb’を取り上げます。bookmarkさんが既に取り上げていますが，復習の意味合いで再度取り上げます。Oxford Dctionary.comには“A photograph that has been spoiled by the unexpected appearance of an unintended subject in the camera’s field of view as the picture was taken”という定義がされていました。要は，写真を取る際，「障害物となる要素」（人でも物でも可）が「偶然入ってしまう」というのがポイントです。この語で表現するのではないとすると，動詞のblockなどに副詞的な要素を補わなくてはなりません。それと比べると，この語はすっきりして見えます。この場合は，ダイヤ上，Flying ScotsmanとVirgin Trainがすれ違うことは分かっていたということも十分考えられますから，この記事の筆者は，photobombかどうかは定かではないというところから，鍵括弧をつけたと考えます。（Kawada）

ご無沙汰をしております。白金台支所のMain Bridgeです。
本日、K県の採用者の希望制の事前研修会があり、参加して参りました。新卒での合格者や臨時任用を経ての合格者たちが一堂に会し、優秀授業の紹介を受けたり、着任に向けての期待や不安を話あったりと非常に実りのある一日となりました。私も春からの生活に向けて、より一層身が引き締まりました。
4/1からZ市にある、Z SHSで働くことになりました。既に校長や英語科の主任、指導教官とはお話をさせていただいたのですが、非常に温かさを感じ、また職員室の雰囲気も良く、不安が少しとれました。
4月からは社会人として激動の一年目を過ごすことになりますが、少しでも早く"Stand on your own feet"できるように日々精進していきたいと思います。

こんにちは。
卒業発表があり、自分も無事に卒業できることになりました。１、2年次の行いによりゼミに入ってから単位数で大変ご心配をおかけしまして、本当にすみません。また、教職の課程論等でも大変ご迷惑をおかけして本当にすみませんでした。
近況ですが、海外教育実習に向けて着々と準備を進めています。29日から3月9日までにウィーンとプラハに訪問予定で、4~5校を訪問し、授業を行います。さらに大学院のReadingの課題で4冊の本を読み、プレゼン用にまとめるというものもあり、苦戦しています。加えて教採の勉強もあり、勉強するために専大とC大院の行き来が続いています。
大変ではありますがやり甲斐を感じて勉強しています。先生は月曜から復帰されたということですが、まだまだ寒さは続いております。どうかご自愛ください。（Inaho）

ドイツのメルケル首相は，難民問題で各国に協調を求めました。現状では，マケドニアやブルガリアがギリシャとの国境沿いにフェンスを設置しております。フェンスを設置したことで，難民がEUに流入する入口の一つであるギリシャが混乱しております。
記事の中で気になった表現は"leave in the lurch"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）で調べると「＜窮地に陥っている人など＞を見捨てる, 見殺しにする」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"Leave an &associate or friend &abruptly and without &assistance or support when they are in a difficult situation"と定義されております。各国が難民受け入れを制限してしまうと，特定の国が過剰な人数を受け入れることにつながってしまいます。（Ume）

Suginami anime museum to boost multilingual services for foreigners
To better accommodate foreign visitors who are fans of Japanese anime, Tokyo’s Suginami Ward is expanding its efforts to provide multilingual services at the Suginami Animation Museum.
The ward is home to about 70 anime production companies such as Sunrise Inc., which produced “Kido Senshi Gundam” (Mobile Suit Gundam). The ward government set up the museum in 2005, aiming to make anime a major attraction for promoting tourism. The museum offers information on topics such as the production process and history of anime.

“rectify”を拾い上げます。Cobuild English Dictionaryでは“if you ~ something that is wrong, you change it so that it becomes correct or satisfactory”と定義されており、『ジーニアス英和辞典第三版』では「1.《正式》…を改正(訂正)する、直す 2.《電気》(交流)を直流に変える,整流する;《化》…を精留する 3.〈数〉(曲線の)長さを求める」との記載があります。これらの語義から連想できる”correct”や”modify”とはどう使い分けるのでしょう。同じくCOBUILDで索引してみると、前者は”if you ~ something, it is in accordance with the facts and it has no mistakes”と、後者は”if you ~ something, you change it slightly, usually in order to improve it”との記載があります。これらを加味して考えると、”rectify”は「誤っているものを正す(その正し方は一様ではない)」、”correct”は「ある答えがあり、それに倣って正す」、”modify”「向上させるために修正を加える」といったところでしょうか。
政府が国家戦略特区の対策案の一つに、「クールジャパン」として注目されているアニメ、ファッションといった分野での外国人就業の環境を整える、という旨の記事を目にしました。現在は厳しく制限されているこの分野での外国人就業が緩和されれば、更に海外からの関心が高まり、ソフトの売上げが伸びることでより品質の良いコンテンツを世界に発信していくことも見込めるかもしれません。(あいづ)

今回採り上げるのはplug。この単語は以前に「（テレビ・ラジオ番組に挟む本や映画の）広告，宣伝」や「推奨の言葉」という意味で採り上げられています（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。

これでも十分に意味は理解できますが，さらに英英辞書で調べてみました。するとThe Concise Oxford Dictionary（10th edition）にはa piece of publicity promoting a product or eventとありました。よって記事のput in a plug for environmentalismは「環境保護を訴えた」や「環境問題に言及した」などのように解釈できると思います。（Koyamamoto）
Oscar shines on 'Spotlight'
(CNN)"Spotlight" is basking in the golden glow of Oscar.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" may have won more honors at the 88th Academy Awards, leading all films with six. "The Revenant" won some major prizes, including the first Oscar for actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
…But the big story was DiCaprio, who finally won an Oscar with his fifth acting nomination.
After taking some time to thank Iñárritu, co-star Tom Hardy and director Martin Scorsese, among others, DiCaprio put in a plug for environmentalism.
"Climate change is real. It is happening right now; we needed to go to the tip of South America to find snow. ... It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species," he said. "We need to support leaders around the world who speak for indigenous people, for humanity, the voices who have been drowned out by the politics of greed. Do not take this planet for granted. ... I do not take this night for granted. Thank you."
