Suginami anime museum to boost multilingual services for foreigners
To better accommodate foreign visitors who are fans of Japanese anime, Tokyo’s Suginami Ward is expanding its efforts to provide multilingual services at the Suginami Animation Museum.
The ward is home to about 70 anime production companies such as Sunrise Inc., which produced “Kido Senshi Gundam” (Mobile Suit Gundam). The ward government set up the museum in 2005, aiming to make anime a major attraction for promoting tourism. The museum offers information on topics such as the production process and history of anime.

To rectify this problem, the ward has decided to create audio guide services in English, Chinese and Korean, with the hope of making them available in April or shortly after. The ward government has further earmarked \7.8 million in its draft budget for the next fiscal year for the introduction of tablet PCs equipped with translation functions.

“rectify”を拾い上げます。Cobuild English Dictionaryでは“if you ~ something that is wrong, you change it so that it becomes correct or satisfactory”と定義されており、『ジーニアス英和辞典第三版』では「1.《正式》…を改正(訂正)する、直す 2.《電気》(交流)を直流に変える,整流する;《化》…を精留する 3.〈数〉(曲線の)長さを求める」との記載があります。これらの語義から連想できる”correct”や”modify”とはどう使い分けるのでしょう。同じくCOBUILDで索引してみると、前者は”if you ~ something, it is in accordance with the facts and it has no mistakes”と、後者は”if you ~ something, you change it slightly, usually in order to improve it”との記載があります。これらを加味して考えると、”rectify”は「誤っているものを正す(その正し方は一様ではない)」、”correct”は「ある答えがあり、それに倣って正す」、”modify”「向上させるために修正を加える」といったところでしょうか。
政府が国家戦略特区の対策案の一つに、「クールジャパン」として注目されているアニメ、ファッションといった分野での外国人就業の環境を整える、という旨の記事を目にしました。現在は厳しく制限されているこの分野での外国人就業が緩和されれば、更に海外からの関心が高まり、ソフトの売上げが伸びることでより品質の良いコンテンツを世界に発信していくことも見込めるかもしれません。(あいづ)
