CNNの記事を取り上げます。フランス当局は、ほかにもテロ攻撃が計画されていたことが分かりました。幸いにもテロ攻撃は実行されなかった。

今回取り上げる表現は、“jettison”です。まず、意味を確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「（無用なもの・人）を捨てる、取り除く、（考え・予定など）を放棄する」と記載されていました。今回の場合は、後者の意味として用いられています。この記事では、テロリストは、テロ攻撃の計画を放棄していることが記されています。さらに、Merriam-Websterで英語の定義をみると、“to get rid of as superfluous or encumbering : omit or forgo as part of a plan or as the result of some other decision ”とありました。不必要や負担になるものが放棄されることがこの定義から捉えられます。

twice as cold
映画『The Curious Case of Benjamin Button』(2008)（邦題：ベンジャミン・バトン 数奇な人生）から表現を拾います。
この物語の主人公ベンジャミンは見た目が80歳の状態で生まれ、年を重ねるごとに若返っていくのです。ベンジャミンが50歳くらいの頃、幼なじみのデイジーとロシアについて話している場面からです。
Daisy: I’ve always wanted to go to Russia. Is it as cold as they say?
Benjamin: Twice as cold.
このベンジャミンの返答、”Twice as cold”が気になりました。字幕では「凍るくらい」と訳されていましたがなぜでしょう。
辞書をいくつか見てみましたがこの表現を見つけることができず、ネット検索に懸けることにしました。すると、次のような文がたくさん出てきました。
If it’s zero degrees today and the weather man says it’s going to be twice as cold tomorrow, what will the temperature be?
確かに0度の倍は0度ですが、それほどに寒いことを表す表現だということが分かりました。”Twice as cold”は”Twice as cold as zero degrees”の略のようです。”zero”でも”degrees”と複数になることに注意する必要があります。
せっかくなので寒さを表す語彙を集めてみました。”twice as cold”は”freezing”や”arctic”と同等くらいの寒さでしょうか。(bookmark)

1995年に公開されたCGアニメーション長編映画、「トイ・ストーリー」はもはや誰もが一度は見たことのある古典的作品になりつつあります。子供から大人まで楽しめるコメディ要素満載の映画ですが、別の角度で見てみると「コメディ」のひとことで済ますわけにはいかないようです。BBCから取り上げます。

It’s a scene from the creepiest of Philip K Dick-inspired science-fiction thrillers. Stranded in a hostile environment, a man discovers that everything he knows about the world is a lie. All of his memories are fake, all of his convictions wrong. He isn’t the hero he assumed he was. He isn’t even an individual. He is an automaton, manufactured from metal and plastic, his only purpose to amuse his creators. No wonder Buzz Lightyear gets so depressed.
It’s exactly 20 years since audiences first saw that scene in Toy Story, Pixar’s debut feature-length cartoon. Heralded as a groundbreaking triumph in 1995, the film is now enshrined as a classic, and every other Hollywood studio has copied its innovations: its eerily realistic digital animation, its snappy screwball dialogue – co-written by Buffy/Avengers mastermind, Joss Whedon.
But the film’s most radical element, and the one which hasn’t been imitated by any other studio, is its theme of disillusionment. As hilarious and heartwarming as Toy Story may be, its impressively downbeat thesis is that you’re not special, you’re the same as everyone else, and you won’t be content unless you resign yourself to your unremarkable fate. That’s quite something from a cartoon co-starring a talking Mr Potato Head.

今回取り上げる表現は “resign oneself to~”です。 “resign”というと反射的に「やめる」という意味が思い浮かびますが、文脈的に相応しくないことは明らかです。LDOCEで確認してみますと “to make yourself accept something that is bad but cannot be changed”と定義づけられており、G4（大修館書店）では「〈人が〉〈運命・状況など〉に甘んじて従う」とありました。例文として “He resigned himself to his fate”で「彼は運命に身を任せた」が挙げられており、この記事でも同等の意味であるといえます。（Inaho）

トルコ軍が，ロシアの戦闘機を撃墜させた件についてです。トルコ軍は，ロシア機がトルコ領に侵入した際に警告をした音声を公開しました。音声でははっきりと"change your heading south"と警告しているようです。一方ロシア側は，パイロットは警告の音声を受信しなかったと主張しているようです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"staunch"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「信頼するに足る, 誠実な，熱烈な, 頑強な」などという意味がありました。ODには"Very loyal and committed in attitude"と定義されております。"staunch"の語源は「水も漏らさない」とあります（『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂））。（Ume）
Turkey releases audio of 'warning' to downed Russia jet
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended the action by the country's military, saying "everyone must respect the right of Turkey to protect its borders".
He said he did not want to escalate tensions further.
Turkey is a member of Nato. The alliance has backed Turkey's version of events, although it, too, is calling for "diplomacy and de-escalation" to resolve the situation.
Russia and Turkey have found themselves on opposing sides in Syria's conflict, with Russia supporting President Assad, while Turkey is a staunch critic.
Turkey is part of the US-led coalition against the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.

get into a lot of stuff
UG先生に教えていただいた記事からです。
米テキサス州ヒューストンで母親が恋人と外出中に、１歳の女児がオーブンで焼死する事件が起きました。まだ幼いその子のきょうだいが女の子を誤ってオーブンに入れてしまったということです。
Neighbors told abc13 the mother would leave the children behind regularly.
"That is something I would absolutely would not do," says Serentiy Humphrey, a neighbor of the woman in question. "They are already at that age when they get into a lot of stuff anyways, so I wouldn't do it."
取り上げるのは”get into a lot of stuff”です。
“get into”には多くの意味がありますが、ここでは「《略式》（仕事、趣味など）にひどく興味を持つ、のめり込む」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』）の意味で使われていると思われます。LDOCEには”informal to begin to enjoy something or be interested in it”という定義がありました。”stuff”は「（漠然と）物、こと」を表し、”thing”や”matter”より口語的です。
亡くなった女の子をオーブンに入れたのは３歳の双子のきょうだいだったらしく、ちょうどそのくらいの子どもは「多くのことに興味を持ち始めて夢中になる」時期なので、子どもたちを家に残して外出した母親に非難の目が向けられています。
「興味がでてきた」と言いたいとき”became interested in”などと言ってしまいそうですが、今後はよりシンプルな”get into”を使いこなせるようにしていきたいです。(bookmark)
nativity scene
ニューヨーク市クイーンズ地区にある「聖なる子イエス・キリスト教会」でへその緒のついた赤ん坊が置き去りにされているのが見つかる出来事がありました。
For a few moments, the sight could have been confused for a miraculous arrival ahead of the Christmas season: A newborn baby, hours old and full term, appeared within a nativity scene at a Queens church on Monday.
But the story of how the baby got onto the stage inside the Holy Jesus Child Church in the Richmond Hill neighborhood was much more earthly, the police said: A woman, seen on video, had arrived with the boy wrapped in a towel, his umbilical cord still attached, and departed without him.
"nativity scene"を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』によると「(絵画や像で表された)キリスト降誕場面」とありました。神から授かった子供は『ルカ福音書』でmanger(飼い葉桶)に寝かされるよう描かれています。
実際もその絵のように、教会にあったイエス・キリストの生誕の場面を再現したクリスマス飾りの中に、タオルに包まれた状態で置かれていたということです。どれくらいの間置かれていたのかはわかりませんが、見つかったあと病院に運ばれ、今は無事に元気だということで神が守ってくれていたのではないかと思いました。
ニューヨークの法律では、安全で適切な場所であれば親が赤ん坊を置き去りにしても罪には問われないということにも驚きました。(lua)

本格的に冬到来です。札幌では62年ぶりに11月の積雪量が40センチを超えました。

先生の近刊でも取り上げられていますが，"descend on"には、「（大勢の人が）人、場所に押しかける」という意味があります。『Wisdom英和辞典』（三省堂）LDOCEを見てみると、"if a large number of people descend on a person or a place, they come to visit or stay, especially when they are not very welcome"とあり、例文として"Millions of tourists descend on the area every year."が挙げられていました。記事の中でもonの後ろには場所が来ていて、「札幌雪祭りのために大勢の人が北海道を訪れる」となっています。
今年も残り1ヶ月か、と実感しています。（Starlight)
