夜分遅くに失礼いたします。某市教員採用試験の１次の結果無事通過することができました。「グラスゴーの奇跡」と同じことが起きたてしまったとしか言いようがありません。A30にて先生と出会う機会がなかったらこのような結果にならなかったと思います。心から感謝を申し上げます。
２次試験の対策もしっかりとして、臨みたいと思います。これからもご指導ご鞭撻を宜しくお願いいたします。

帰京
中継地の彦根市から昨日，戻ってきました。せっかくだからご当地アイドル ひこにゃんでも見に行けばよかったのですが，刺すような太陽の光にまいって，そそくさと家路に着くことにしました。
名神は順調。そのまま，東名，新東名と乗り継いで帰るつもりでしたが，ナビが厚木周辺の大渋滞（小田原厚木道路で起きた事故の影響？）を計算し中央道ルートを推奨してきたので小牧から一路北上。
ここも快適。しかし肝心の眺望は南アルプス，中央アルプス，八ヶ岳ともに夏特有の天候のためか，かすんで見える程度で，残念。中央道の旅は秋，冬ですね。９：００に彦根を出て，恵那，伊那谷，諏訪を回って１４：００には調布に到着。直ちにガソリンスタンドで愛車 F10の旅のあかを落としてやりました。燃費が１４キロ/リットルだったのには感激。
単独運転に加えて，この暑さ。疲れがどっと出ました。本日は広島大の教育学会の日です。一時は松江から広島に直行とも思っていましたが，今回も無理はしないことにしました。三浦先生，すみません。
この間，ブログっ子の教採一次の結果がちらほら入り始め（都はまだだよね），疲れを癒してくれました。と言っても一次は一次。次の関門突破にむけて気持ちを新にしてください。
今日から荒れ放題になっている書斎の整理をしながら，松江調査の整理にもかかります。来週の全国英語教育学会までには整理整頓をすませたいなと考えています。（UG）

World and European champions Spain fell to a surprise defeat in their opening match of the Olympic Games as Japan claimed a 1-0 win with a hugely impressive performance at Hampden Park.
Yuki Otsu’s first-half goal was enough for three points but in truth the margin of victory could have been much greater as 10-man Spain struggled with the pace and pressure enforced by their opponents.
The 1992 Olympic champions were already 1-0 down when they had Inigo Martinez sent-off with five minutes remaining in the first half and failed to recover from their numerical disadvantage.
Keigo Higashi, Kensuke Nagai and Hiroshi Kiyotake all went close for Japan after the break but the one goal was enough to send the Asians top of Group D after Honduras and Morocco’s 2-2 draw earlier in the day.
Spain started the game by trying to impose their usual possession-based dominance on the game but they were hustled from the very first whistle by an energetic Japanese outfit.
Chelsea’s Juan Mata forced Shuichi Gonda into a fine save with Spain’s only serious effort of the first half but it was Japan who were threatening more regularly and they were rewarded after 33 minutes when Otsu outmuscled Martin Montoya to prod home Takahiro Ohgihara’s corner.
Kiyotake should then have doubled the lead as he pounced on a wayward backpass from Alvaro Dominguez but after rounding David De Gea he just could not turn his shot on target from a narrow angle.
Spain were then plunged into even more trouble moments later when Martinez was sent-off for bringing down Nagai just outside the area. And despite half-time appearing to come at the right time for Luis Milla’s men they looked just as rattled after the break as the Japanese passed up a host of opportunities to extend their lead early in the second half.
De Gea was called into action to make a fine save from Higashi in the 49th minute but the Manchester United goalkeeper should have been left helpless when Nagai broke through on goal moments later, only for the striker to pull his shot inches wide of the target.
Kiyotake had an almost identical opportunity two minutes later at the end of an amazing solo run through the Spanish defence but again his shot slipped just wide.
Milla had introduced midfielders Ander Herrera and Oriol Romeu for more offensive options in Isco and Adrian Lopez to try and stem the tide and while the tactic worked in preventing the Japanese counter-attacking with ease, Spain still struggled to create their own clear-cut openings.
Jordi Alba’s effort was easily smothered by Gonda with 12 minutes remaining but Spain were again thankful to De Gea as he made a stunning stop to once again deny Nagai before Hotaru Yamaguchi sliced wide with the goal at his mercy in stoppage time.

男子サッカーの一次リーグ スペイン戦（グラスゴー，ハンプデンパーク）についてもうひとつ。大津選手をはじめとして多くの選手が「奇跡」とは呼んでほしくないといい，さらにはサッカー解説者の多くも同様に「冷静な分析による作戦が功を奏した結果である」と述べています。
その「グラスゴーの奇跡」ですが，AFPの記事にあったinとofの違いに興味を持ちました。各紙が使っていた“Miracle in Glasgow”のinは，たまたま初戦試合の会場がグラスゴーであったという場所を伝えているに過ぎません。これに対して，“Miracle of Miami”の方は，属性を示すofが（日本の）サッカーの文脈でマイアミというと，ブラジルを破った「（あの）マイアミ」である，つまり，日本サッカー界の歴史的な勝利とマイアミとの強い結びつきをこのofが表しているように感じました。
記事の５パラ目にあるMainichiの見出しではofがすでに使ってあります。グラスゴーの地も後世に語り継がれるVictory of Glasgowとなるのでしょうね。こんな心に残る事例を使って前置司を教えると，中学生にはわかりやすいかもしれません。
なお，Mainichiはスペインの「無敵艦隊」をunbeatable Armadaと，（おそらくは）簡単に言い換えていますが，正確には(the) Invincible Armadaです。（UG）

Japan was euphoric Friday after their men’s soccer team scored a stunning 1-0 victory over Spain in one of the greatest upsets in Olympic soccer history.
Newspapers hailed Thursday’s win as the “Miracle in Glasgow,” reviving memories of their famous “Miracle of Miami” victory over Brazil at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
The first-half goal from Yuki Otsu gives his side a great chance of reaching the knockout rounds.
“We won! We actually won!” the Nikkan Sports daily roared on its front page, with nearly all of Japan’s newspapers and broadcasters splashing dramatic headlines and photos of the jubilant squad.
The Mainichi Daily’s headline boasted “Otsu sinks unbeatable Armada,” while the Sports Nippon said: “In a shock to the mother nation and to the world, the ‘Miracle of Glasgow’ happened in the opening match of the Olympics.”
“Japan blow away Spain,” the top-selling Yomiuri Shimbun said, with a photo of an exuberant Otsu beside a Spanish defender lying on the pitch.
“Japan’s men Olympic soccer squad have put in poor performances in recent times. But they fought bravely against Olympic champion hopefuls Spain and secured the admirable victory,” the Yomiuri said.
It described the underdog win as a “gold star that will go down in Japanese soccer history,” using a term usually reserved for an upset victory in sumo wrestling, one of the nation’s favorite sports.
A surprise victory by the Japanese women’s side against the United States at the World Cup final last year was also huge news in a country reeling from the devastating quake-tsunami disaster.
But the influential Asahi Shimbun on Friday said the men’s win was no miracle, chalking up their success to a solid performance.
The government also got a word in with Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura hailing the men’s victory, after the women’s side also notched up a win over Canada this week.
“After the great news about the women’s team, it is truly a great start that the men also won against mighty Spain,” he told reporters.

margin for error
先日の全英オープンで世界ランキング1位に返り咲いてロジャー・フェデラー選手。ロンドン五輪ではどのような戦いを見せてくれるのでしょうか。margin for errorは「間違ってもよいゆとり」を意味する表現です（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。そこで以下の太字部分を直訳すると「短期決戦ではミスの許容範囲はより小さくなる」となり，「わずかなミスも許されない」という意がここでは表現されています。これと関連した表現に“We have no margin for error.”があるので，これも一緒に押さえておきたいです。
なお，先生が今日アップされた記事にもthe margin of victoryという表現がありました。（GP）

ヤンキース・スタジアムで屋根のない，格安の観客席はbleacherと呼ばれます。さらにcreaturesはそこに生息する（？）なファンのことを指します。あわせていつしかこの言葉が「熱狂的なヤンキースファン」という意味で使われるようになったわけです。イチローも初戦のホームゲームでさっそく大歓迎を受けたようです。（UG）

London (CNN) -- Hundreds of millions around the world have been dazzled by the sights and sounds of director Danny Boyle's opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The four-hour, £27 million ($42.4 million) spectacle contained references to such globally-recognized British icons such as James Bond, David Bowie and Harry Potter's Lord Voldemort.
But with the production tossing out historical and cultural references at a rapid rate, even the most ardent Anglophiles in the audience may have felt some allusions whiz over their head like an airborne nanny.
The Oscar-winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire" says the ceremony, titled "Isles of Wonder," was inspired by a passage in Shakespeare's The Tempest, believed to have been written in 1610 and set on a remote, magical island.
Although that phrase itself appears nowhere in the play, the character Caliban refers to his home as an isle "full of noises, sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not."
