It seems at first sight like a comedy sketch. A man walks into a shop, buys a cup of coffee and politely tells the attendant ‘I’m robbing you, sir’ after taking out a gun.
But this really happened to Washington convenience store owner John Henry, when a robber showed him a black handgun and asked if he could ‘please’ empty the till.

'Could you do me a favour?': The robber politely asks shop owner John Henry if he can empty the till for him, as he does not have enough money to feed his children
‘Could you do me a favour - could you empty that till for me please, put that right here,’ he said. ‘I’m robbing you sir.’
Mr Henry, who owns the White Center Shell station in Seattle, asked him if he was sure he wanted to rob him and said he wanted to know why.
‘Because I need the money,’ the robber responded. ‘I have kids that need to be fed, sir. I’m really sorry to have to do this.’
Mr Henry offered him $40, but the man demanded all of the money – around $300 – and apologised again as he was given it.
He added: ‘Thank you very much, and if I ever get back on my feet again sir, I’ll bring it back.’
'Thank you very much': John Henry is told by the robber that he will come back and repay him if he manages to 'get back on his feet again'
The robber, who drove off in a red car and left fingerprints on the scene, was described as in his mid-50’s and around six-feet tall.
‘I felt sorry because he will get caught and spend at least 15 years behind bars for what - $200 or $300?” Mr Henry told television station KIRO 7.
The whole exchange was captured on CCTV with sound, and the King County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
Mr Henry said he had been robbed several times before but this was the first time he has ever felt sorry for the thief.
