Wakanohana remembered for pursuit of sumo's essence

Former sumo wrestler Katsuji Hanada, who died of kidney cancer on Sept. 1, aged 82, maintained that the heart of sumo lay inside the dohyo, or wrestling ring.
The ring, formed by straw bales on a clay mound, measures 4.55 meters across, or 15 "shaku" using the traditional standard of measurement.
"The essence of sumo lies within the 15-shaku ring," said the grappler, the first to wrestle under the name Wakanohana. These very words represent the life of Hanada, whose nickname in the ring was the "Devil of the Dohyo."
