裏ゼミで読んだカンヌ国際映画祭で最高賞を受賞した是枝監督の記事から拾った英語を紹介します。
Koreeda’s ‘Shoplifters’ wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

見出しにあるPalme d’Or をとりあげます。日本語訳では「パルムドール賞」となりますが、これの元々の意味はどうなるのでしょうか。
その形態からわかるようにこれはフランス語で、palmeが「ヤシの葉」、d’Orはde (of) + Or「金」で併せて、「黄金のヤシの葉」の葉となります。palmeは英語ではpalmで、『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)を調べると「手のひら, ヤシの葉」とあります。
では、なぜ「ヤシの葉」なのでしょうか。調べてみると、ヤシの葉は西洋では勝利・栄誉の象徴とされていることがわかりました。Oxford English DictionaryでPlame d’Orをしらべると “1960s; earliest use found in International Film Guide. From French palme d'or, lit. ‘golden palm’ from palme + d' + or gold.” と定義されています。
日本人監督がこの賞を受賞したのは1997年の『うなぎ』以来になります。『万引き家族』は6月8日に日本で公開される予定です。ぜひ観に行きたいと思います。(amphibian)

今回取り上げる語は、pageantry /pˈædʒəntri/ です。語構成から pageant が語幹であると推測できます。意味等を以下で確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“impressive and colourful ceremonies” とあり、Collins Dictionary には “People use pageantry to refer to the colourful and formal things that are done for special official or royal occasions, for example the wearing of special clothes and the playing of special music.” と定義されていました。
次に語源を ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY でみると、“splendid display," 1650s; see pageant + -ry.” とあり、pageant を確認すると “late 14c., "play in a cycle of mystery plays," from Medieval Latin pagina, of uncertain origin, perhaps from Latin pagina "page of a book" (see page (n.1)) on notion of "manuscript" of a play.” とありました。
以上のことから、pageantry は「堂々とした色彩豊かな式典」という意味を持つことがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
meek as a lamb 復習
これまで語学研修内でessayを書く課題が複数回あり、Writingにおいて改善点が多くある自分にとっては非常に良い練習となっています。また最近、私が手をつけているのは、以前UG先生が紹介された『英文構成法』（五訂新版、金子書房）です。そしてやはり、いかに英文の基礎的知識が抜けていたのかを痛感させられます。ですがこれもwriting向上のため。地道に取り組んで参ります。
今回紹介する表現はmeek as a lambです（『英文構成法』の中からのピックアップ）。本書には、例文として “In this his last illness, he was meek as a lamb.” と載っていました。初めは「子羊のように仄々とした様子であった」と解釈しましたが、どのように使われているのか以下で確認していきたいと思います。
『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）では、meekで「過度に従順な、柔和な、温順な、忍耐強く控えめな」、(as) meek as a lambで「子羊のようにおとなしい」とありました。また、lambを引くと、第三義に「おとなしい（人や子供）、無邪気な人、だまされやすい人、（[poor]と共起されて）かわいそうな子」とありました。
また、English Definition Dictionary Reversoでは、“spineless or spiritless; compliant” と定義されています。
以上のことから、例文に立ち戻ると、「病気の最終段階（終末期を迎えた）における人間の状態及び様子」を子羊の姿と連想して、as meek as a lambを用いていることが再確認できます。ちなみに、手持ちの辞書『Oxford Canadian / Thesaurus of Current English』には、類義語として “like a lamb to the slaughter” が挙がっていて、こちらは「畜殺場へ引かれる子羊のような」というニュアンスの元、穏やかであると判断できます。cf. the lamb of God, as gentle as a lamb（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）

taxi 復習
昨日のゼミでUG先生に教えていただいた表現を取り上げたいと思います。taxiと聞いてまず思い浮かぶのが乗り物のタクシーですが、動詞で用いると飛行機が滑走路を走る様子を表すことができるそうです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみると「（飛行機が離着陸の前後に誘導路、水上を）滑走する、移動する（along, down）」とありました。例には “The jet taxied out on the runway.” 「ジェット機は滑走路へと移動して行った。」という文が取り上げられています。
LDOCEには “if a plane taxis, it moves along the ground before taking off or after landing” と定義されています。
以前ブログに取り上げられていたものを見てみると、滑走路はtaxiwayといい、TWYと略した形でも用いられることがわかりました。こちらもセットで覚えたいと思います。（aqua）

High on the page, in a bold font, is a quote from a speech the then Meghan Markle delivered on International Women's Day in 2015: "I am proud to be a woman and a feminist."

見出しにあるcredentials / krədɛ́nʃəlz /を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「≪…としての / …のための≫人物[能力、信用]の証明となるもの、実績、資格≪as / for≫」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“someone’s education, achievements, experience etc that prove they have the ability to do something”と定義されています。ちなみに、この単語の第2義には「証明書、信任状」、また動詞としては「〜に信任状を与える」といった意味があります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。これらの意味から、形も似ているcreditと関係があるのではないかと思い、インターネットで検索してみました。「goo辞書」の語源の項目を辿っていったところ、やはりcreditに行き着きました。関連させて覚えておきたいと思います。

気になったのはborough / bˈɚːroʊ, ‐rə / です。『ジーニア英和辞典』で調べると「（New York 市の）行政区」「（アラスカ州などで）町，村」「（行政単位としての）市」「（ロンドンの）区（metropolitan~）」「《英》（下院の）選挙区」と複数意味を持つことがわかりました。上記はアメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州最北端に位置する行政区、ブロンクス区の記事なので1番目の意味が適切です。
LDOCEでは“a town, or part of a large city, that is responsible for managing its own schools, hospitals, roads etc”と定義されていました。(Kiwi girl)
