South Korea elected the left-leaning Moon Jae-in as its next president on Tuesday, bringing almost a decade of conservative rule of the country to an end.
Liberal Moon, 64, ran for president against conservative Park Geun-hye in 2012. He lost narrowly — only to win five years later after Park was ousted for corruption.
But though South Korea’s domestic politics likely played the largest role in Moon’s victory, his win will have international consequences — including for President Donald Trump’s policy toward North Korea.
Moon is an outspoken advocate of dialogue with North Korea, and open to returning the Blue House to what used to be known as the “sunshine policies,” of greater engagement with the North. As chief of staff to President Roh Moo-hyun during Roh’s term from 2003 to 2008, Moon was part of an administration that pursued exactly that, increasing political and economic contact with North Korea in an effort to keep the peace.

A Florida teenager accused of tossing a 68-year-old woman into a pool during a party at an apartment complex is on house arrest.
The Miami Herald ( http://hrld.us/2pADrmt ) reports a judge on Tuesday ordered the 16-year-old to serve 21 days of house arrest. But he's allowed to go to school, church and to travel with his basketball team.
The teen is charged as a juvenile with battery on a person over the age of 65. He's shown on a video throwing Nancy James into the pool as she tried to break up a party near Fort Lauderdale that more than 200 teens showed up for on Saturday.
The teen turned himself into authorities on Monday. He faces another hearing in June.

“beat down” を取り上げます。beatには敵を負かす、棒などで打つ、たたくなどの意味がありますが、downがついて句動詞になるとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると、自動詞で「（太陽が）ぎらぎら照りつける、（雨が）激しく降る」とありました。雨が地面を打ち付けるイメージがわきます。例文には “The hot sun was beating down on our heads.” 「暑い太陽が我々の頭の上に照りつけていた。」と載っていました。
LDOCEには “if the sun beats down, it shines very brightly and the weather is hot” や “if the rain beats down, it is raining very hard” と定義されています。
ちなみに他動詞には「1（…）を打ち落とす、たたき落とす 2（略式）（値段）を値切る、（売り手）に値を負けさせる」という意味があります。（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）「値切る」という表現は、言えそうで言えない表現だと感じたのでこれを機に覚えたいです。以前ブログではbeatを用いた句動詞が他にも取り上げられています。（aqua）

記事の中で気になった単語は"showboat"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』(三省堂)には「(技量・能力などを) 見せびらかす, ｟米｠ 園芸船，ショートボート ｟芸人を乗せて米国Mississippi川沿いを巡業して回った｠」などという意味がありました。フランス大統領選挙でもマクロン候補の機密情報などを流出させるサイバー攻撃がありましたが，こちらもロシアの干渉を疑っておりました。ロシアの選挙への介入やトランプ大統領とロシアの関係を調べてきたFBIですが，トップが変わった結果どのように調査が続けられるのかが気になります。(Ume)

Mr Trump said this week he alone was responsible for the decision to sack Mr Comey, calling him a "showboat" and "grandstander".
Mr Trump has dismissed the FBI investigation as a "charade" and has said Democrats are using "fake news" about collusion with the Russians as an excuse for losing the election.
In another tweet on Friday, Mr Trump said: "When [former Director of National Intelligence] James Clapper himself, and virtually everyone else with knowledge of the witch hunt, says there is no collusion, when does it end?"
