60,000 high school students to take English exam
The education ministry will hold English examinations between late June and early August at 218 high schools nationwide to test students' ability to express themselves and their pronunciation, officials said Wednesday.
The exam targeting around 60,000 students who are in their third or fourth year of high school is designed to check their linguistic competence ahead of next year's introduction of new English education guidelines for high schools, in which students will be required to speak in English during English classes.

テニスの４大大会の一つであるウィンブルドン・トーナメントが開催中です。元世界ランキング１位のロジャー・フェデラー選手は順当に初戦を突破しました。entranceは名詞で「入口，玄関」などの意味を表しますが，記事のように受身形で用いられると「（通例受身形で）（人を）有頂天にさせる，うっとりさせる，魅了する，感極まる」といった意味を表します（『新英和中辞典』初版，旺文社）。つまり，entranced fansで「興奮したファンたち」などと解釈できます。（GP）

Facebook、海外では株価の期待はずれやprivacy流出で人気が下火になっていますが、日本では昨年度のアクセス数が倍になったそうです。
こうしたuniqueの使い方は前から気になっていました。これはコンピュータ用語で、「ウェブサイト、またはウェブサイト内の特定のページを訪問した人の数。」と定義されるそうです。ただし一般にuniqueという単語には注意が必要です。例えば、Japan is a unique country.などのように使うと、「日本は違う存在なのだ！」のような誤ったメッセージを伝えてしまいます。
常時英心も、先般、ユニークアクセス数が３０万を突破しました（途中からカウンターを導入したので実際の数字は５７万強です）。もう１〜２年したら内容の一部を単行本にする予定でいます。今から楽しみです。（UG）
Facebook doubled its visitors in Japan
The number of Japanese who visit Facebook has more than doubled in the last year, according to data from research company Nielsen.
About 17.2 million unique visitors from Japan were recorded on Facebook last month, more than double the 8.2 million in May 2011. The evolution from the previous month (May vs. April 2012) was also sharp, at 16 percent.
Despite the rapid increase, only 29.1 percent of Japanese Internet users are visiting Facebook, according to Nielsen. In the U.S., the percentage is much higher, at 67.2, while in South Korea the value is also higher, at 39.3 percent.
Facebook has been less interesting to Japanese, who largely prefer to remain anonymous while sharing pictures and other personal information online. It became more and more interesting after the 2011 quake and tsunami, when people wanted more to connect online and many chose Facebook over other services, like mixi.
Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, met Japanese prime minister Yoshihiko Noda in late-March for a brief discussion in Tokyo.

第3回英語音声教育研修講座
以前、お知らせした第3回英語音声教育研修講座が迫ってきました。今週、土曜日には早稲田大学で、続いて日曜日には沖縄で開催されます。早稲田ではSugiuchiくんが松坂ヒロシ先生を補佐して準備、その他にあたっているそうです。わたしは沖縄会場の方に参加します。久しぶりに東後勝明先生にお会いできるのが今から楽しみです。（UG）

incalculableはin-（否定）＋calculable（計算できる）なので，「測りきれない，数えきれない」という意味です（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』大修館書店）。approximateは「近似になる，おおよそ〜になる」という意味ですが，ここでは少し比喩的に使われています。「原発の使用を抑えても，それは失ったものと同等の価値にはならない」，つまり「原発の使用状況が改善されたところで，失ったものは戻ってこない」ということです。（Sugiuchi）
茶番劇
今朝テレビで電力会社の株主総会が行われたというニュースを観ていたら、インタビュアーの「株主総会はどうでしたか？」という質問に株主(shareholder)の方が「あんなの茶番ですよ！」と憤慨していました。
この「茶番劇」は英語でなんて言うのだろうと思い、調べてみました。
まず日本語の意味を確認すると、「ばからしい、底の見え透いたふるまい。」という意味(『広辞苑』)でした。
そして、それに合う英語表現を探すとfarceという単語がありました。(『プログレッシブ和英中辞典、第3版、小学館より)
LDOCEでさらに調べると、"an event or a situation that is very badly organized or does not happen properly, in a way that is silly and unreasonable"とありました。
さらに調べると、"be akin to a low comedy"という表現で「茶番といってよい」(英辞郎on the WEB)もありました。直訳すると「低俗な喜劇と同類である」ですがニュースなどで見る東電の株主のインタビューを聞いているとこれぐらいの表現も使えるのかもしれませんね。（EnDough）
