Tampa, Florida (CNN) -- After one month and three contests, it may be up to Florida to finally add some clarity to the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
With three different winners in the three contests so far, Florida could finally be the state to put one of the four remaining major GOP candidates firmly into the front-runner position.

先日開催されたアブダビHSBCゴルフ選手権。Tiger Woods選手も好調でしたが，優勝はRobert Rock選手の手に渡りました。以下はDY（2012/01/31付）の記事の見出しから英語表現を拾います。

見出しのRockは「岩）と優勝したRobert Rock選手とを文字っている事は容易に想像できます。また，underは「…の下に」以外にも「…に覆われて，隠れて」などの意味があり（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第2版，三省堂），それを踏まえてunder a rockを訳すと「岩に隠れて」となります。さらにネットでも調べてみると“under a rock”で「〔困ったことや恥ずかしいことが起こったので〕身を隠して」とありました（英辞郎on the WEB）。今大会，Woods選手は全体的にショットが安定していたにも関わらず，大事なところでミスが出て3位に甘んじました。つまり，ここでの見出しは「（Woods選手は）Rock選手の下に隠れた，Rock選手の下に影を潜めた（＝Rock選手に敗れた）」などの意味が考えられます。（GP）

今回の表現はfar cry from 〜です。抜粋部分の内容からも意味は想像できそうですが，辞書で確認してみるとbe a far cry from Aで「（くだけて）A〈物・事〉とは程遠い，大いに異なる」とあります（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第2版，三省堂）。この表現からは，cryが入っていることで「落胆，嘆き」などのニュアンスが感じられます。確かに，年俸の差額だけを見れば結構なものですが，ただ，入団記者会見に臨んだ川上投手の顔を見ると，少し晴れ晴れしたようにも見えます。古巣での再ブレークを期待したいと思います。（GP）
