今回取り上げる表現は、wrong-foot /ˌrɒŋˈfʊt/ です。一見、「誤った足どり」とでも言いたくなる表現ですが、文脈からそれが妥当でないことは明白です。一体どういった意味を持つのか、以下でみていきましょう。
まずLDOCEで確認すると、“to surprise and embarrass someone, especially by asking a question they did not expect”とあり、Cambridge Dictionaryには“to cause someone to be in a difficult situation by doing something unexpected”と定義されていました。ここから「...の不意をつく、...をまごつかせる」という意味があることがわかります。
また、Cambridge Dictionaryに“in a sport, to hit or kick the ball so that the other player believes the ball will go in the opposite direction to the one in which it will really go, in order to make him or her move in the wrong direction”とも記載があり、これは例えばテニスなどの競技で、相手の意表をついたリターンをすることを表します。語の成立としては、後者の意味から前者に転じたというのが自然でしょう。
以上のことから、wrong-footは「(テニスなどで)意表を突いたリターンをする」「(相手の)不意をつく」という意味があることがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
