　newsreel /núzrìl/ を取り上げます。newsとあるのでニュースと関係があるのは分かりますが、どのような意味なのでしょうか。
　『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「ニュース映画」とあります。いまいち意味が分からなかったので、LDOCEでも調べてみました。すると“a short film of news that was shown in cinemas in the past”とあり、過去の出来事などが記録されている映画のことであるということが分かりました。社会科の時間で見るようなあのビデオのことかと思います。
　ちなみに、reelを調べてみたところ、「リールひと巻き分の量（の上映時間）」とありました。これがnewsと合わさってこのような意味になるのではないかと思います。(rain)
