ここでcount onを紹介します。「数える」という意味は思いつきますが、この記事では意味が通りません。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「数え続ける」の他に、「＜人・事＞を[＜人などが＞…するのを]頼りにする；頼る, あてにする」とありました。Cambridge Dictionaryには “to depend on someone or expect something” と定義されています。説明によると助動詞(can, could)なしの場合は進行形で用いられます。

「頼る」という表現は他にdepend on, rely onがあり、微妙にニュアンスが違います。
LDOCEで調べると、depend onは “to need something or someone in order to exist, or be healthy, successful etc” とあり、rely onは “to depend on something or someone to do or provide what you need, especially because you have to choice” とありました。
まとめると、
count on：あらかじめ土台となるものがあり、それに乗る
depend on：頼りきっている
rely on：過去の事実や経験などが背景にある

同じ意味でもニュアンスは違うのですね。(amphibian)
