気になったのはsquash /skwάʃ/ です。この単語を見たときに最初に連想したのはスポーツのスカッシュとレモンスカッシュです。記事のsquashはどのような意味で使われているのでしょうか。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「つぶれる、ぐしゃぐしゃになる」とありました。また、Merriam-Websterでは“to flatten out under pressure or impact”とありました。共起しているのがplanなので、おそらく「頓挫した」や「(計画)倒れ」といった意味になるのではないかと思います。
ちなみに、最初に連想したレモンスカッシュはレモンが潰されて入れられている飲み物だということはわかりますが、スポーツのスカッシュがどうしてこの名なのか気になったので調べてみました。ウィキペディアによると、この名称は「球が握りつぶせる」ことからきているそうです。(Blue Sky)
