smolder /ˈsmoʊldɚ/ を取り上げます。smoで始まっているところから、smogやsmokeなどのように煙に関連する語ではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「1くすぶる、いぶる　2（主に文）（心の中に）くすぶる、内にこもる」とありました。イギリス英語ではsmoulderという綴りになります。

　Merriam-Websterには “to burn sluggishly, without flame, and often with much smoke” や “to be consumed by smoldering —often used with out” とあり、他にも “to exist in a state of suppressed activity” などと定義されています。火が出ない状態で、もくもくと煙が立ち込める様子を表します。

記事の内容に戻ると、シャンゼリゼ通りでは物が燃えた際に出た煙で辺りが覆われている様子が伺えます。（aqua）
