mooncalf 復習
The Tempestを読んでいる際に見つけた単語を紹介します。mooncalfです。文脈からCaliban（醜い野蛮な男）という人物を表しているものであると予想し、さらに秋タームの間に読んできた他のシェイクスピアの作品では「馬鹿者、愚か者」のような表現が人に対して多く用いられていたので、今回もその意味であると予測しました。以下辞書の定義です。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “a foolish person”
Collins Free Online Dictionary: “a person lacking intelligence” “a person who idles time away”
Merriam-Webster: “a foolish or absentminded person : simpleton”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「愚か者、まぬけ、ばか者」「時をぼんやりと過ごす人」
本の脚注では以下のような説明がなされていました。 “a misshapen birth, a monstrosity （cited in OED 2b, presumably caused by the full moon. Warburton notes: ‘It was imagined that the Moon had an ill influence on the infant’s understanding” [235]
以上のことから昔は月が幼児の理解力、知性に悪い影響を与えていると考えられていたということがわかります。
またcalfは「子牛」という意味ですが、『ジーニアス英和大辞典』によると「未熟、無垢、愚かさの象徴」として用いられることもあるようです。
