thunderclap

The Tempestを読んでいた際に出会った単語を紹介します。thunderclap /ˈθʌndəklæp/ です。「雷鳴」という意味を持つというのは明らかだったのですが、見たことのない単語であり、調べてみたら新しい発見もあったので紹介します。以下辞書の定義です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “a crash of thunder” “used in similes to refer to something startling or unexpected”

Collins Advanced Learner’s Dictionary(8th): “A thunderclap is a short loud noise that you hear in the sky just after you see a flash”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「（一回きりの）雷鳴；突然の出来事[悪い知らせ]」

同辞書にはlike a thunderclapで「思いがけなく」という意味になると記載されていました。OEDの例文にも同じ形で使われている例があったので参考程度に載せておきます。“The door opened like a thunderclap” “The joke struck the banker audience like a thunderclap”
