On a windy day in October this year, metal panels attached to the roof of a nine-story building fell, hitting and killing a man who was walking on the street below. The building owner had neglected to have the building inspected regularly and submit reports on the findings to administrative bodies, which are required for buildings of a certain size. The panels' deterioration is believed to have been one of the causes of the incident.

When going through installation renewal procedures, owners are asked to inspect their signs for corrosion and other indications of deterioration, and to submit a report. corrosion /kəróʊʒən/ を取り上げます。文脈から、看板が老朽化していないかどうか調べるという意味になるかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くと「腐食（作用）、腐食によって生ずるもの（さびなど）、腐食部分、衰退」とありました。
LDOCEには “the gradual destruction of metal by the effect of water, chemicals etc or a substance such as rust produced by this process” と定義されており、徐々に傷んでいく様子が “the gradual destruction” という部分に表れています。
似たような形のerosion / əˈroʊˌʒən/ も気になったので調べると、そちらは “the process by which rock or soil is gradually destroyed by wind, rain, or the sea” や “the process by which something is gradually reduced or destroyed” とあり、岩や土が雨風などによって削れていく様子や、何かがだんだんと減少したり壊れたりしていく様子を表すことが確認できました。（aqua）
