crop up 復習

今回取り上げる表現は、crop up です。crop は主に名詞で「農産物」、動詞で「刈り取る、収穫する」という意味を持つ基本語ですが、今回の記事にはどれも当てはまりません。文脈からは「登場する」といった訳を思い浮かべられます。以下で意味を探っていきます。
まず Cambridge Dictionary でこれをみてみると、“to happen or appear unexpectedly” とありました。また、Collins Dictionary には “If something crops up, it appears or happens, usually unexpectedly” と定義されています。
以上のことから、”...Lee began letting the characters from one title crop up in others...” の箇所は Avengers をみればわかるように、ある Marvel Superhero が主人公を務めるものに留まらず、他の作品にも登場させるようになったと意味をつけることができます。つまり、crop up は「(大抵予期せず)生じる」という意味を持つ表現であることがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
