in lieu 復習
The Tempestを読み進めている時に出会った表現を紹介します。in lieu /lúː/ です。おそらくフランス語由来の語であろうという予測は立ちましたが、適切な訳語が見つからなかったので調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “instead”
Collins Advance Learner’s Dictionary (8th): “If you do, get, or give one thing in lieu of another, you do, get, or give it instead of the other thing, because the two things are considered to have the same value or importance.” “if you do, get, or give something in lieu, you do, get, or give it instead of something else, because the two things are considered to have the same value or importance.”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「［…の］代わりに（instead）[of]」
語源はOEDによると “ Middle English: via French from Latin locus ‘place’とのことです。
これを見てinsteadのsteadの語源もplaceという意味であったことを思い出しました。こういう知識のつながりが発見できると頭にも残りますし、やはり、うれしいものです。(ko-chi @ Calgary)
