 昨年12月にニューヨークの地下鉄駅付近で起きた爆弾テロ事件について、バングラデシュ出身の移民であるアカエド・ウラー被告に有罪評決が出されました。

Bangladeshi man convicted in NYC subway bombing

A Bangladeshi immigrant was convicted Tuesday of setting off a pipe bomb in New York City’s busiest subway station, disputing in court that he was supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group and saying he was instead motivated by anger at U.S. President Donald Trump.

The unusual outburst by Akayed Ullah, who was convicted in Manhattan federal court of supporting the terrorist group, capped a trial in which the defense maintained he intended to kill only himself last Dec. 11. Nobody died, and most of the injuries were not serious.

Prosecutors said Ullah sought to maim or kill commuters in response to calls for “lone wolf” terrorist attacks by the terror group. Just after jurors walked out, Ullah announced he had something to say and repeatedly insisted he did not act on ISIL’s behalf.

 maim /méɪm/ を取り上げます。maim or killとあることから、重症を負わせるという意味になるかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』(第5版 研究社)で調べると「(格式)(重症で)(…)を障害者にする」とありました。

LDOCEには “to wound or injure someone very seriously and often permanently” と定義されています。完治しないほどひどく傷つける様子が伺えます。

語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryで調べてみると “from Old French mahaignier “to injure, wound, mutilate, cripple, disarm,” a word of uncertain origin,” とあり、詳しいことは分かっていないようですが、傷つける、手足を不自由にするなどの意味を表す語からきていることがわかりました。(aqua)
