stand someone in good stead 復習

取り上げるのはstand someone in good steadです。今現在読み進めているThe Tempestの中で用いられていたstead「代理；助け、利益」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館））という単語を調べた際に偶然出会いました。同書にはstand [put, hold] O in good [little] steadで「｟正式｠〈物・事が〉（苦しい立場・時期に）〈人〉に大いに役に立つ[ほとんど役に立たない]」という意味になると記載されていました。以下英英辞書の定義です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “be advantageous or useful to someone in the future”

Collins Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th): “If you say that something will stand someone in good stead, you mean that it will be very useful to them in the future”

Cambridge Dictionary: “If an experience stands a person in good stead, it is or will be of great use to them”

これらの定義を見ると「将来的に役に立つ」という意味であることが伺えます。また今回調べた際に見た例文では一つを除いてすべてに過去形か未来形が用いられており、残りの一つも現在完了形が用いられていました。これらを見た限りでは、現在形が使われることはほとんどないと言うこともできるかもしれません。一つOEDから例文を挙げておきます。

“It will certainly stand me in good stead for the future and I have always loved working hard in the gym.”

個人的には未来を表すときにはすぐin the futureとしてしまいますが、この場合はfor the futureとなるということに注意しておきたいです。(ko-chi @ Calgary)
