Man on!

今回紹介するのは man on です。

先日、U of Cサッカーサークルの練習試合にキーパーとして参加し、プレー中の仲間への指示は自分なりの英語がなんとか通じたようで結果オーライだったのですが、1人のCanadianが発した “ Man on!” が印象に残りました。以下で意味等確認していきます。

最初にCambridge English Dictionaryを引いたところ、“a warning shouted to a football player who has the ball to make him realize that an opposing player is behind him.” と定義されておりました。

次にUrban Dictionaryを参考にすると、“When there is an opposition player behind the player with the ball, the crowd and other players shout “man on” to warn him of the opposition player’s proximity.” とあります。

まとめると、Man on! で「敵が（後ろから）来ているぞ！」となるかと思われます。“A man is behind you!” もしくは “behind you!” しか頭に思い浮かばなかった自分にとっては非常に勉強になりました。スポーツ用語に当たる英語などは、こういった機会を利用しながら、どの場面でどの単語や表現が使われるのかを知識としてしっかり取り入れたいと思いました。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
