hocus pocus 復習
今回もLinguisticsの授業の中で取り上げられた単語を紹介します。hocus pocus /hòʊkəspóʊkəs/ です。初めに見たときは全く予測がつきませんでしたが、耳に残る音だなという印象を受けました。以下辞書の定義です。
Oxford Dictionary of English（2th）: “meaningless talk or activity, typically designed to trick someone or conceal the truth of a situation” “a form of words often used by a person performing conjuring tricks”
Collins Advanced Learner’s Dictionary（8th）: “if you describe something as hocus-pocus, you disapprove of it because you think it is false and intended to trick or deceive people”
Cambridge Dictionary: “tricks used to deceive, or words used to hide what is happening or make it not clear” “words said by a magician (= a performer who pretends to do magical things) when they are doing a trick”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「ごまかし、作り話」「（奇術師の）呪文、まじない；手品」
まとめると、基本的には人をだますため、もしくは何かを隠すための「意味のない話・行動、ごまかし、呪文」という意味になることがわかりました。
語源はOEDによると “early 17th cent.: from hax pax max Deus adimix, a pseudo-Latin phrase used as a magic formula by conjurors”とのことです。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
