volte-face

ある授業の中でMedusaについての記事を読みました。その中で見つけた単語を取り上げます。volte-face /vɔ̀(ː)ltfɑ́ːs/です。意味の確認に入ります。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “an act of turning round so as to face in the opposite direction” “an abrupt and complete reversal of attitude, opinion, or position”

Collins Advanced Lerner’s Dictionary (8th): “if you say that someone’s behaviour is a volte-face, you mean that they have changed their opinion or decision completely, so that it is the opposite of what it was before”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：【フランス】「（正式）［単数形で］（意見・方針などの）180度の方向転換(about-turn, U-turn)」

語源はODEによると “early 19th cent. : from French, from Italian voltafaccia, based on Latin volvere ‘to roll’ + facies ‘appearance, face’.”とのことです。これを見れば発音に注意が必要な理由が分かります。

また『ジーニアス英和大辞典』（大修館）によるとmake[do] a volte-faceで「方向転換をする」という意味を表すことが可能だそうです。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
