smash-mouth 復習

今回取り上げる語は、smash-mouth です。ラケットを使ったスポーツをしたことがある方には馴染みのある smash という語が使われています。「スマッシュ」は相手のコートに球を強く打ち付ける、攻撃的な球です。私自身、バドミントン部に所属していましたから「スマッシュ」のイメージは強く残ってます。このようなイメージから smash-mouth は「攻撃的な口調の」と意味を推測できます。以下で詳しく見ていきます。
まず smash の語源を OED でみると、“Early 18th century (as a noun): probably imitative, representing a blend of words such as smack, smite with bash, mash, etc..” とありました。後半部の “smack, smite with bash, mash, etc..” は「ぶつける」や「つぶす」といった意味の語になります。
次に smash-mouth の定義を Merriam-Webster Dictionary でみると、“characterized by brute force without finesse” とありました。
